We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and highly organised person to fill the Senior Scientist, Seed Systems position to be based either in Accra, Ghana or Nairobi, Kenya. 

The seed systems scientist will play a key role in leading delivery and further development of CABI’s Good Seed Initiative, coordinating and implementing project activities in the African region, as well as planning and developing new proposals. 

Project work includes supporting seed production, seed commercialisation and raising awareness of the importance of high quality seed. 

The scientist will also have the opportunity to contribute to other programmes and projects where their expertise is relevant. 

The role requires working closely with a variety of public and private sector partners in the region, facilitating multi-stakeholder processes at national and regional levels. 

Additional responsibilities will include capacity development of private and public partners in activities  related to seed systems. Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant social or biological science with at least 10 years’ experience of seeds systems particularly in developing countries. 

They should have deep knowledge and experience of seed value chains, seed sector development, seed quality, and design and management of field trials. 

They should also be experienced in facilitating and building effective partnerships across the various parts of the seed supply chain. Knowledge of agricultural development in Africa, and an ability to think strategically in developing and managing effective business plans is also required.

The post will necessitate travel away from home base and office. Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience, with appointment for 2 years initially and the possibility of renewal.

SCIENTIST, EU-FUNDED PUSH–PULL PROGRAMME IN SOMALILAND UNDER MILK VALUE CHAIN PROJECT

TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR A SCIENTIST TO IMPLEMENT THE PUSH–PULL TECHNOLOGY IN SOMALILAND UNDER THE EU-FUNDED MILK VALUE CHAIN PROJECT
1. Location – Arabsiyo, Somaliland.
2. Duration – The appointment will be for 18 months only.

icipe — The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics. icipe has over 400 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Africa.
icipe wishes to urgently engage a mid-level scientist to fill the position of SCIENTIST FOR PUSH–PULL TECHNOLOGY IN THE EU-FUNDED MILK VALUE CHAIN PROJECT IN SOMALILAND. This is an internationally recruited position for which a competitive remuneration package will be offered to the right candidate.

Tasks of the Scientist

The successful candidate will be expected to:
(1)  Validate and upscale push–pull strategies in the northwest Hargeisa, Gabiley Region districts of Arabsiyo, Huluuq and Agamso;
(2)  Establish a stakeholders’ platform of local Somali village elders and farmers through extension officers and create awareness about icipe as an organisation and about push–pull as a component in the Milk Value Chain project, and its benefits;
(3)  Establish several farm sites in different locations, and monitor their performance;
(4)  Devise a sampling strategy for selecting farmers to participate in push–pull trials based on established selection criteria;
(5)  Conduct training of farmers on push–pull technology and utilisation of its products— Napier grass, Brachiaria grass and Desmodium;
(6)  Ensure the implementation of best agronomic practices and research protocols in preparing field layout, planting, sampling data collection, data analysis and preparing reports;
(7)  Translate push–pull dissemination materials into the Somali language;
(8)  Develop and expand strategic partnerships with local government, national research organisations, NGOs, CBOs, farmers’ organisations, and universities to support dissemination of the push–pull technology in farming systems in Somaliland;
(9)  Interface with the Government of Somaliland through the Ministry of Livestock and Ministry of Agriculture in getting Push–Pull strategy mainstreamed in their national agricultural system;
(10)    Provide regular feedback to the Programme Leader and Project Coordinator on the projects’ status and advising on budget re-allocations, among other actions.

Outputs and Deliverables

Outputs expected after the end of every season are:
  • Project technical progress report and financial report, to be shared with the Project Leaders
Expected outputs by the end of the contract duration are:
(1)  A detailed project report with the number and GPS-referenced locations of farmers who have planted Push–Pull fields;
(2)  A compilation of project activities, including farmer group trainings, field days and other public dissemination events undertaken during the contract period;
(3)  A report outlining contents of a technical training package on Push–Pull technology;
(4)  A report of scientific research outputs and resulting publications.
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • PhD in Agricultural Entomology;
  • 5 years working experience in a closely related discipline within a reputable international organisation, agricultural research or extension organisation;
  • Experience in programme/project management at country level;
  • At least 2 years experience in working with small-scale farmers in Somaliland;
  • A progressive track record of related research work, analysis and publication;
  • Experience in research data management;
  • Experience in Brachiaria and Desmodium research work.
Other desirable attributes
  • Fluent in the Somali language
  • Knowledge of Somali culture
  • Computer literacy
  • Good research and project management skills
  • Excellent reporting and communication skills
  • Knowledge of government policy and social cultural contexts of rural development in Somaliland.

This position reports to the Principal Scientist and Programme Leader, Push–pull Habitat Management Programme.

The primary purpose of the position is to provide overall leadership and management of the research and monitoring programs of Lewa and the Greater Lewa Conservation Area.
 
Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Overall implementation of Lewa Research and Monitoring Department’s Strategic Plan within the Conservancy and the Greater Lewa Conservation Area.
  • Oversight of Lewa’s ecological, rangeland and biodiversity monitoring programs including monitoring of wildlife, vegetation, water and environmental variables.
  • Support Lewa’s endangered species monitoring programme with rigour, accuracy and adaptation of techniques to address emerging priorities on the Conservancy and in the region with short notice.

  • Development and maintenance of updated GIS databases of Lewa.

  • Scientific analysis of ecological, rangeland and biodiversity monitoring data, while availing timely and accurate reports with applied management recommendations.
Qualifications
  • A Master of Science degree in natural sciences.
  • A minimum of five years proven experience in ecological, rangeland and biodiversity research and monitoring skills.
  • Excellent and demonstrable analytical, communication and reporting skills to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to organize, plan and direct programs.

Vacancy: Field Assistant – Doubled Haploid (DH) Nursery Operations

About the Position: To provide support to the Research Technician for Double Haploid (DH) in the establishment and management of the haploid induction, Do/ selfing and inducer line nurseries, including all the support field processes required in the production of maize inbred lines for African maize breeders in the public and private sectors.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in seed preparation, land preparation and agronomic care and maintenance of the haploid induction block, selfing, and inducer lines nurseries that include, but not limited to judicious application of farm inputs, plant health, and sanitation;
  • Assist in the proper execution of planting, pollination and harvesting protocols;
  • Assist in data collection, reporting and information dissemination in an accurate and timely manner, securing-maintaining the identity and integrity of breeding materials by ensuring proper labelling and documentation from seed reception throughout the DH process;
  • Assist in managing the nursery budget by optimal allocation and effective supervision of manpower and judicious use and tracking consumption of field supplies;
  • Assist in the planning and implementation and achieving target outputs of field trials and experiments for continuous process improvement;
  • Attend safety meetings and assist the DH Management in the implementation of the CIMMYT DH Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental policies, and Code of Ethics;
  • Assist in instituting discipline among nursery workers, foster a respectful workplace and interacts professionally with all levels of management, project stakeholders, breeder-scientists and external parties doing business with DH Africa;

Essential Qualifications:
  • Diploma in Agriculture/Applied Biology or other relevant discipline;
  • Minimum 5 years practical experience in maize production research, including experience working in maize doubled haploid technology, particularly setting up haploid induction blocks, pollination work management involving haploid inducer lines, plant scoring, capturing field data and systematic data organization; establishment and maintenance-management of selfing (production of doubled lines) and inducer nurseries;
  • Experience in leading 40 to 60 person labor crew in a multi-tasking field environment;
  • Working knowledge of Quality Management System in the seed industry;
  • Background experience in Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Compliance;
  • Experience in maize haploid selection, seed germination, chromosome doubling, laboratory procedures, handling-disposal of hazardous laboratory wastes, seedling management in greenhouse setting is an added advantage.
