Specific Tasks

Call for Participation: IT & ITES SMEs and START-UPS

The International Trade Centre (ITC), a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, engaged in trade-related technical assistance, is implementing the project “Netherlands Trust Fund III Kenya: Enhancing Export Competitiveness in the IT&ITES Sector in Kenya” (NTF III Kenya IT&ITES) .

This project aims to enhance the export competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises in the IT&ITES sector in Kenya and linking them to foreign companies interested in off-shoring their services to Kenya. 

The project will work in partnership with the Kenyan IT and Outsourcing Society (KITOS) and the Information and Communication Technology Authority (ICTA).

ITC’s NTF III will be working primarily with thirty three (33) micro, small and medium enterprises as well as IT start-ups. This Expression of Interest will facilitate the selection of these enterprises.
 

The selected companies will benefit from the following support activities in the framework of the NTF III Kenya Project:
  • Training and advisory services e.g. on export marketing and access to finance.
  • Market linkages through facilitating B2B matchmaking events in Europe and Africa as well as participation in trade fairs organized in Kenya and/or target IT&ITES markets
  • Promotion activities through online and offline media
The selection of companies will be based on a number of criteria, aimed at identifying their capacity to benefit the most from the NTF III Kenya IT&ITES project. 

Criteria will include: demonstrated IT expertise available in the company, clarity of its strategy (notably its export strategy), size of the company, financial soundness of the company, attitude towards employment of women, availability of marketing communication material (e.g. web site, brochures).

Using the above criteria, a team of independent IT Experts will select the 33 enterprises to be part of the project. 

Their recommendation will be reviewed by the project management team at the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the selected companies will soon after be informed. 

KITOS and ICTA will be involved in informing the industry of the EOI, but not in the selection process itself to avoid any conflict of interest.

SID Active Citizenship Grants

We are offering seed grants of up to KShs 1.5 million to county based partner organisations working to promote active citizenship and responsive governance in ten select counties. 

The grants will support citizen actions and activities between 15th September 2014 and 31st August 2015 in Bungoma, Garissa, Kajiado, Kisumu, Machakos, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nyeri, Turkana and Taita Taveta.

Criteria for application
 

Successful applications will have demonstrated, among others;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of Kenya and how this could translate at a county and local level;
  • Passion for deepening spaces for meaningful interactions between citizens and their leaders;
  • Clear statement of impact sought in the county especially in terms of mobilisation of citizens to engage their county governments;
  • Existing programme, financial and administrative capacity to manage grants of this nature;
  • Office presence and outreach capacity in the stated county of interest.

Objective of the position 

The Regional Institutional Funding Manager for HECA covers 8 countries / business units in portfolio of which 5 countries (DRC, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia) have an Institutional Funding Officer in-country (sometimes shared). 

To coordinate and support fundraising initiatives in the HECA region as well as information management and monitoring. 

To identify and mobilise new sources of income for the HECA region, by applying a strong entrepreneurial approach and supporting IFOs in HECA countries.

Main tasks 

  • To coordinate all fundraising initiatives for Oxfam Novib in the HECA region, including assessing funding proposing before they are signed off by the Regional Director; 
  • To analyse concept notes, proposals and reports on consistency, completeness, presentation, relevance to the donor and on the correct compliance with the donor’s demands. 
  • Assist in drafting and editing project/programme proposals in coordination with country teams and others; 
  • To consolidate and coordinate all management information related to external funding for the HECA region, both for management, reporting and monitoring purposes; 
  • to liaise directly with the external funding department in the head office on behalf of the region and consolidate and analyse quantitative and qualitative information; 
  • To identify opportunities for fundraising with institutional donors, foundations and the private sector. Acquisition with (potential) donors for specific themes; 
  • In doing this, be the driving force behind regional funding initiatives and sourcing; and to inform and advise country teams on new acquisition opportunities; 
  • To assist and advise country teams on addressing contract management and compliance issues and to alert the Regional Director of important issues and risks; 
  • To support, recruit and train Institutional Funding staff in the HECA region; 
  • To coordinate with funding staff of other affiliates, in particular with the regional funding office on Oxfam GB in Nairobi;
  • To work with country teams and the Programme Development Coordinator in the Hague in building a strong programmatic base in line with identified thematic priorities; 
  • To maintain contacts with embassies and other donor institutions and make continuous investments to expand the network.
You 
  • Have a University degree in international relations, development studies, anthropology, geography, or related field and proven experience at this level; 
  • Have at least 5 years of work experience in the field of development cooperation preferably with an NGO; 
  • Have experience with identifying fundraising opportunities preferably for NGOs and a good track-record of successfully acquired funding and donor-compliant implementation of programs; 
  • Have experience with preparing project proposals for institutional donor agencies, including the European Commission, ECHO and private foundations as well as experience with other main donors’ rules and regulations; 
  • Have extensive knowledge of HECA (preferred); 
  • Have experience and knowledge of project cycle management, including monitoring, technical and financial reporting;
  • Have good communication and coaching skills; 
  • Have good knowledge of the INGO sector; are a natural networker with substantial experience of building relationships with (potential) donors; bringing a network of donor agencies is an asset;
  • Having a relevant thematic specialization is an asset as is a strong background in programming and project management; 
  • Have the willingness and ability to travel regularly; 
  • Have English and French proficiency both orally and in writing.

VSO Jitolee Vacancy: Programme Development and Funding Manager

VSO Jitolee, an independent INGO registered in Kenya and governed by a local board, is a member of the VSO federation based in Nairobi with a regional mandate to promote volunteerism and recruit skilled professionals from the region to serve as volunteers in VSO’s 33 country programmes.

What we are looking for

P3 Temporary Appointment – Donor Relations Specialist

UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office, Nairobi

Purpose & Scope

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Director and working in close collaboration with the Private Sector Engagement and Programme team in the Regional Office, the incumbent will be responsible for donor relations, preparing fundraising proposals and reports to donors as well as situation reports and other official reporting documents. 

The incumbent will assist in the mapping of existing initiatives with private sector actors in the region and in collating the information into a coherent framework. 
The incumbent will also contribute to a knowledge management system to facilitate dynamic and creative information sharing of private sector engagement activities across countries.

Key Activities and Outputs

The incumbent will carry out the main tasks outlined below.

  • Donor Relations. Provide ‘one stop shop’ services to both current and potentially new donors for UNICEF programme in ESAR, including coordination with UNICEF programme staff, provision of fact sheets, donor briefings and meetings, monthly donor updates, organisation of donor field visits and liaising between government donors, National Committees and UNICEF programme staff.
  • Proposal development. Coordinate the development of concept notes and funding proposals. Ensure quality of donor proposals before submission to donors, including ensuring that all proposals are in line with both, donor interests and the UNICEF programme strategy.
  • Donor reporting. Prepare analytical and results oriented donor reports on time, working closely with field colleagues, relevant programme sections, the Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation team, and the Regional Office.
  • Briefings. Provide support in conducting a comprehensive research and analysis of substantive material and draft reports related to ESAR including status of programme implementation reports with. Provide substantive support to the Regional Director and senior management specifically in speech writing, talking points, preparing briefs and other related activities as required.
  • Mapping. Assist in mapping of existing UNICEF related private sector initiatives in the region. Assemble the initiatives into an organising framework for assessment and analysis.
  • Knowledge Management. Provide support to the office in facilitating a dynamic knowledge sharing platform and process.
  • Other duties. Other duties as required including assisting in the implementation of the work plan for the region.
Timeframe

Qualifications
  • Advanced University Degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Communication, Social Sciences or related fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible professional work experience in communication, project administration, monitoring and evaluation, some at the international level.
  • Strong planning/organizing, and networking/relating skills
  • Strong writing and editing skills, including knowledge and experience in writing for UNICEF and demonstrated experience in editing strategic documents as well as internal and external communication materials.
