Job Summary: Under general supervision of field researcher, the incumbent is responsible for listening and transcribing all the recorded interviews and presenting the information in typed format using the coding system so as to preserve the confidentiality and privacy of the interviewee.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Listening to all the recordings saved after the field interview and reducing them to written notes maintaining all the information provided in the interview;
  • Typing and proofing the interviews in the format required and maintaining the coding system for each client interviewed;
  • Ensure transcripts provide a clear and full verbatim record of the audio file
  • Assuring chronological typing order and/or urgency of assigned work;
  • Verifying the information typed corresponds to the extent possible to the information provided in the order provided;
  • Duplicating the typed documents as and when requested;

Description of Work:
 

The AHME Impact Evaluation is an external evaluation of the African Health Markets for Equity (AHME) initiative. 

The goal of the impact evaluation is to rigorously evaluate the extent to which transforming the business model of franchised providers and expanding access to demand side financing through AHME generates effective and cost-effective coverage of priority technologies and interventions amongst the poor. 

The research project will collect data from private health facilities in Nairobi Eastern and Central regions to measure the health impacts of improving the delivery and quality of private healthcare services. 

The intervention is two-fold, and aims to impact health outcomes through both the supply of services, and the demand for them. 

This position is temporary and will be based in Nairobi.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:
 
Transcription Supervision/Data Management
  • Supervise the transcription process including distributing work, checking and receiving completed work, and managing those who work from home 
  • Review and assist transcriptionists with difficult segments of recordings 
  • Remove background noise from recordings when necessary/possible 
  • Perform back-checks on all completed transcriptions 
  • Manage any contract/payment issues with the transcriptionists 
  • Address any IT issues that arise with the computers 
  • Oversee use of computers (i.e. no internet or use of USB without manager's permission; update/maintain anti-virus software, etc) 
  • File and store all tapes, guides, consents, and demographic forms 
  • Transfer encrypted files to UCSF and delete any files on computers 
  • Store computers and related hardware once done 
  • Willingness to work off hours, including evenings and weekends if needed to supervise staff 
Data Translation / Transcription 
  • Listen to original recording material in local language/English and type out focus group discussion and in-depth Interview texts in English to ensure that translations from the local language retain the content, meaning of the original material
  • Check translations of technical and/or medical terms from local language terminology to ensure that they are accurate and remain consistent throughout translation revisions into English language
  • Proofread to correct spelling mistakes in English
  • Accurately relay style or tone so that meaning remains the same when translating or interpreting from local language to English language
  • Adhere to strict deadlines when dealing with translating written material
  • Protect the confidentiality of materials as required
Qualifications
  • A Diploma or University degree (Social Sciences, health related courses preferred)
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word and excellent typing skills are required
  • Strong oral and written communications skills in English is required
  • Strong oral proficiency and basic grammatical knowledge of Swahili is required
  • Ability to understand and grasp various expressions, idioms and specific vocabulary and their uses
  • Good listening skills and a high level of attention to detail
  • Experience in transcription/management at least one year is strongly preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Prepares and adapts materials in support of blind or visually impaired students
  • Transcribes instructions, tests, classroom materials maps, textbooks, charts and other instructional materials into Braille
  • Prepares a variety of other tactile and/or enlarged materials for students’ use, using a thermo phoning machine
  • Translates (interlines) Braille print for the benefit of classroom teacher, parents, specialists, and others
  • Operates an enlarging copying machine in duplicating Braille material
  • Consults with classroom teacher on material us and determines appropriate adaptations for individual students
  • Assists TVI and/or classroom teacher by providing the and in support of Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instruction

Qualifications:
  • Certificate in Braille Transcription from KISE or KIB
