Job purpose:
 
The job holders shall be expected to carry out research, teaching and supervision of students’ projects, theses and dissertations.
 
Reporting:
 
The job holders shall report to their respective Heads of Department (HODs).
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • To teach various courses as assigned by the HOD;
  • To conduct research, publish and participate in seminars;
  • To supervise students’ research work;
  • To ensure that quality continuous assessment of students takes place and feedback promptly given to the students;
  • To be available for students and staff for office consultation.
  • To ensure regular review of courses in conformity with quality assurance reports and emerging international best practice;
  • To attend and effectively participate in Departmental, Faculty and University meetings and functions;
  • To actively participate in Department/Faculty/University community service activities;
  • To uphold the good image of the Faculty and the University in the manner in which he or she carries out his or her duties;
  • To be committed to continuous improvement of the Department and Faculty.
  • To perform any other official duties that may be assigned by the Dean, the immediate supervisor and University Management.
Education and Experience:
 
(a) Lecturer
 
Must have a Master’s degree in their area of specialization;
  • Must have a PhD.
Those without PhD should have the following:
  • Should be a PhD candidate;
  • Must have a Master’s degree in their area of specialization;
  • Must have 3 years teaching experience as an Assistant Lecturer (full time) at University level;
  • Should have published at least two (2) articles in referred journals or one University level textbook or at least two (2) book chapters since appointment as Assistant Lecturer;
  • Must have evidence of participation in community service.
(b) Senior Lecturer
  • Should have a PhD in relevant discipline;
  • Must have taught for at least three (3) years in an internationally recognized university since promotion to lecturer;
  • Must have an outstanding record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by at least three (3) publications in scholarly referred journals since promotion to Lecturer;
  • Have at least two (2) presentations at national or international conferences since promotion to lecturer;
  • Supervision of at least four (4) masters theses since promotion to lecturer;
  • Have demonstrated capacity to promote research, teaching and community service in a competitive environment.
(c) Associate Professor
  • Have a PhD in relevant discipline;
  • Must have attained at least the rank of Senior Lecturer with at least seven (7) years experience of teaching in an internationally recognized university;
  • Must have an outstanding record of scholarship and academic leadership as evidenced by at least five (5) publications in scholarly referred journals since promotion to Senior Lecturer;
  • Have at least four (4) presentations at national or international conferences since promotion to Senior Lecturer;
  • Supervision of at least five (5) masters theses and/or PhD dissertations since promotion to Senior Lecturer;
  • Must have taught for at least three (3) years in an internationally recognized university since promotion to Senior Lecturer;
  • Have demonstrated capacity to promote research, teaching and community service in a competitive environment.
The Person(s):
  • Must demonstrate high level of maturity and integrity;
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Have excellent computer skills;
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision;
  • Be ready to work closely with students.

Senior Epidemiologist

KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation is a prominent knowledge and expertise centre and stimulates effective, efficient and sustainable tuberculosis control strategies in a national and international context. 

It operates from the central office in The Hague in the Netherlands, regional offices and additional country offices worldwide. 

The organization was founded in 1903 by a private Dutch initiative and now operates worldwide. 

For its funding KNCV is dependent on government subsidies and private contributions through fundraising.

Purpose of the job KNCV primary activity is the building of capacity through the provision of technical assistance. 

An important field is the building of capacity in operational research applicable to the national TB control efforts at country level. 

KNCV is in the process of decentralizing core activities from the central office in The Hague to the regional office in Nairobi. 

One of these activities is the development of the specific technical area of operational research in the African region.

Main duties:
  • Carrying out national and international epidemiological TB research in the African region
  • Maintaining an overview of ongoing TB OR research and analyzing data
  • Developing project plans and proposals for research projects.
  • Assisting researchers in countries in setting up and carrying out research projects; building capacity for research by giving technical support, providing formal training and monitoring performance of the work. This may include local MSc and PhD students.
  • Maintaining contacts with national and international research organizations such as universities, the Medical  Research Institutes, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) etc.
  • Publishing scientific articles and dissemination of results
  • Advising and supporting national TB program staff and partner institutions in the African region in setting up and conducting TB research in a national and international context.
  • Identifying opportunities for research and seeking funding for them
  • Frequent travel (30-40% of the time) to countries within the region
Required qualifications:
  • Academic level of working and thinking (preferable medical specialization).
  • Doctorate degree (PhD) or a minimum of 4 or more first author publications in international journals (not counting abstracts).
  • In-depth knowledge of and experience with research techniques and statistics.
  • Knowledge of epidemiology preferable in the area of tuberculosis.
  • Experience in training and capacity building processes.
  • Ability to work in a team and as an individual.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills in English.
  • Demonstrated skills in research data analysis and statistical programs.

The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) is a not-for-profit subregional organization of the National Agricultural Research Institutes (NARIs) of eleven countries: Burundi, D.R. Gender Specialist

We are seeking to recruit for a Gender Specialist to steer implementation of the ASARECA gender mainstreaming strategy. 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Gender Specialist will be charged with implementation of the gender mainstreaming strategy and ‘Champion’ the process in ASARECA.

Key Tasks
  • Support the strengthening of gender mainstreaming in ASARECA’s programmes and projects which includes use of gender criteria in project proposals, reporting and evaluation, and revision of the gender criteria where appropriate
  • Develop, propose and undertake gender mainstreaming initiatives in the region including providing technical backstopping towards the development of a gender strategy in each of the NARI’s in the 11 ASARECA countries
  • Support ASARECA and its partners to formulate gender responsive policies to enhance gender mainstreaming in agricultural research
  • Identify and build capacity of gender quality assurance teams at appropriate levels in each NARS of ASARECA.
  • Coordinate and maintain a close working relationship and strong communication channels with ASARECA stakeholders
  • Serve as ASARECA’s contact point and partner with social and gender policy experts in the ECA region and consequently build a network for addressing issues of regional priority in relation to gender.
  • Identify individuals who can be champions of change in partner organizations in order to enhance institutional commitment at ASARECA.
Qualification and experience
  • The person will have a University degree in Gender or Development studies, Social sciences, Humanitarian studies or related field.
  • The person will have 5 years progressive experience in application of gender mainstreaming in programmes and projects in agricultural research for development in some or all of the ASARECA member countries with proven qualities of synthesis and strong ability to analyze, prepare and present written materials in excellent English. Knowledge of French is desirable.
