Senior Accountant

1 Position

Key Responsibilities:

• Review data and documents received from project accountants for posting.
• Work with the project accountants and prepare the fund transfers for all programs; ensure that the field imprest request is approval and that they acknowledge receipt of the funds.
• Reconcile funds transfers across all projects on a monthly basis on submit report to Finance and Administration Manager (FAM).
• Submission on a weekly basis reports on petty cash reconciliation and certificate, status report on the outstanding imprest that are over 30days old and action points.
• Report on the status of data posting that has been done for the week.
• Submission on a monthly basis reports on field cash reconciliation for all programs, Bank reconciliation, field imprest reconciliation for all employees, Vendor /Supplier reconciliation, LPOs reconciliation, Updated Asset register
• Assist the FAM in reviewing the financial reports generated by the accountants for the various projects
• This position will have an internal audit function to lead the organization in Donor and institutional audit, preparation of audit schedules and requirements per donor and the organizations requirements.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

• Holds a CPA K or equivalent
• Holds a Bachelors Degree in Accounting
• 3+ years relevant experience
• Proficiency with Navision accounting software will be an added advantage
• Knowledge of USAID, ECHO, SIDA donor regulations is an added advantage

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• High level of attention to details in all aspects of work responsibilities
• Ability to work as a member of a team and to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously
• The ability to work on their own with minimal supervision across multiple projects

Project Description

In the framework of its activities, PlaNet Guarantee is implementing a feasibility study on index-based crop insurance in Kenya. Index-based crop insurance is gaining attention as an important tool to help cope with climate risks that small-scale farmers face. Insurance is paid when the threshold defined by the index is reached.

Thus, the index functions in a systematic way and avoids problems of fraud and high costs linked to claim settlements and these costs savings can be transferred to the farmers in the form of lower premiums.

The index can either be based on the climate (weather stations or satellite data) or on the average yield. The index’s advantage lies in the fact that it is objective, easy to check and transparent.

PlaNet Guarantee proposes to conduct the following activities:

• Determine the feasibility of index-based crop insurance in the Kenyan context
• Build the index and the product
• Test the commercial viability of the product

The Project will aim at reaching the following specific objectives:

• Possibility to build a crop insurance index
• Determine the typology of the demand
• Determine appropriate distribution channels
• Estimate the price, policy and guarantees of the product
• Analyze the regulatory framework
• Conduct a pilote to adjust the product

Job Description

In order to carry out the project’s activities a local coordinator is needed to:

• Analyse local market and contact local authorities involved in the agricultural sector
• Identify and contact local financing agencies involved in agricultural financing
• Manage the administrative and financial aspects of the project in accordance with the funding agency’s requirements
• Accompany experts on field missions
• Lead focus group discussions
• Collect secondary agronomist data
• Analyse the regulatory framework
• Draft a feasibility study report
• Identify possible distribution channels
• Negotiate partnership agreements
• Conduct training sessions

The local coordinator will report to the microinsurance expert and will be under the authority of the Project director.

Required Skills and qualifications

• Suitable candidates will have previous project management experience
• Strong knowledge of microinsurance/insurance/microfinance is a must
• Fluency in Swahili and English is necessary
• Master’s degree or higher
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and communication skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Knowledge of local economy and local agricultural sector is desirable

Key responsibilities:

• Take overall responsibility for the organization’s Internal Audit function in relation to compliance, internal control effectiveness and reporting standards.
• Monitor project implementation in accordance with Grant Agreements including reporting timelines.
