Job Purpose: Reporting to the Group Chief Executive Officer, the General Manager will be responsible for Leading in the formulation and implementation of the company strategy while ensuring optimal utilization of company resources to ensure business growth and profitability in line with business objectives; this also includes providing leadership to factory/ production operations and people management.

Requirements

Background: The Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) program is funded by USAID and responds to the complex crisis that has evolved in Somalia and the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. The overall program goal is to mitigate conflict; to promote stability and community cohesion, and to strengthen citizen-government relationships. 

TIS implements quick impact activities linked to longer-term stabilization goals. DAI, an international development organization is currently implementing TIS in Somaliland, Puntland, Gedo, Lower Juba, Bay and Galgaduud.

To support the programming efforts on the TIS program, the TIS program is currently seeking experienced organizations to Drill Boreholes in Dobley and Kolbiyo in Somalia
 
Goal: The goal of this activity is to promote good relationship among the communities leaving in the area and mitigate conflict related to water access and thus nurture peaceful co-existence between residents involved in different forms of livelihoods.

Objectives:
  1. To provide an alternative source of water for the Dhobley and Kolbiyo community through construction of a borehole.
  2. To promote good relationship among the communities living in Dhobley and Kolibiyo and mitigate conflict related to water.
Tasks
  • All the drilling materials MUST at first be at the site before commencement of drilling so as to avoid borehole collapse occasioned by untimely execution of the drilling processes.
  • The Contractor shall dispose of any toxic materials, drilling fluid and other additives, cuttings and discharged water in a manner approved by the Engineer so as not to create damage to public and private property
  • All machinery, equipment and materials for carrying out the drilling, test pumping, well-head construction, etc. are to be mobilized to the site. Test pumping equipment should be independent from the drilling rig (s). At the start of the contract the Engineer will verify the specifications and state of repair of all major items of the plant. He shall have the right to order the removal and/or replacement of any plant that in his opinion is insufficient or unsatisfactory.
  • The recommended borehole diameter shall be 203 mm.
  • During borehole construction, installation, development and test pumping, the Contractor shall use all reasonable measures to prevent entrance of foreign matter into the borehole. The Contractor shall be responsible for any objectionable materials that may fall into the borehole and any effect it may have on water quality and/or quantity until completion of works and acceptance by DAI Engineer.
  • The Contractor shall, on completion of each borehole, cap the top of the borehole with a 5mm-thick mild steel blank flange. The blank flange shall be 300-mm above the ground level and be spot-welded to the 2-m long mild steel casing coated internally and externally with two coats of nontoxic bitumen or epoxy paint to the approval of the Engineer.
Deliverables

  2. Copy of standard chemical water quality test
Appraisal and Selection
 
Proposals will be evaluated based off the following criteria:

Qualifications
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in drilling boreholes in Sedimetary terrain.
  • Proof of Valid License (Drilling permits) from any Issuing authority
  • Previous Experience with other INGO is preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Somalia political and conflict context
  • Capacity to drill to depth of up to 400m

Vacancy: Head of Geothermal Development

The Company: Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) is the leading power producer generating about 80 per cent of power consumed in Kenya. It is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and is 70% Government owned.
 
The Strategy: The Company operates in a liberalized and regulated single-buyer market competing with Independent Power Producers. The forecasted national peak demand to meet Kenya Vision 2030 objectives is 15,000MW by year 2030. 

KenGen is going to be the major player in attaining this national target. In alignment with this national goal, KenGen has set out an ambitious operational and growth strategy, to grow its capacity from the current 1,236MW to 3,000MW by 2018. 

Launched in 2007 as Good-to-Great (G2G) Transformation Strategy, the Company has completed the first horizon (2008-2012) and is now on the second horizon (2013-2018).

Job Profile
 
Reporting to the Managing Director & CEO, the person will:
  • Lead, oversee and manage the geothermal resource development and operations function and actively participate in the development of KenGen’s corporate strategy.
  • Develop accountability structures, oversee periodic reporting of drilling and Geothermal projects and monitor the performance indicators for the Geothermal Development Division.
  • Manage a large number of staff and cross functional teams in the area including Supply chain, ICT., Finance, Human Resources and Administration Services
  • Coordinate, monitor and direct management and maintenance of reservoir and steam field resources.
  • Oversee power generation in Geothermal operations ensuring timely effective and efficient revenue generating activities, safety adherence and security of the assets within the plants.
  • Develop and coordinate the implementation of environmental and social impact assessment frameworks.
  • Oversee the provision of research and consultancy services, including the hiring of expertise and equipment to local and international clients.
  • Coordinate implementation of resettlement action plans for geothermal projects in conjunction with the Regulatory & Corporate Affairs division.
  • Manage the relationship between the company and local communities and stakeholders on issues related to the Geothermal Development.
  • Be the contact person for all visitors (local & international) to the area and is expected to coordinate all the service providers including contractors.
Person Profile
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Earth Sciences, Business or any other relevant field.
  • Masters degree in Engineering, Earth Science or Business related field is an added advantage.
  • Must be a registered engineer with EBK and a member of I.E.K or member of a relevant professional body.
  • At least Ten (10) years experience at senior management level in plant operations or geothermal technology related roles.
The successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate distinguished leadership with a track record of achievements in the public or private sector backed with a minimum Ten (10) years in senior management roles and be a Transformative and Change leader, keen on detail and strict deadlines with undisputable respect and integrity. 

He/ She will be required to possess strong people management and inter personal skills.

We are seeking a Hydrologist to join the team and work on aspects of our hydro-power projects at all stages of development both in the field and from our Nairobi office.

Summary Job Description: The hydrologist will be responsible for identifying sources of hydrological data, collecting this data and working closely with the consulting engineers to develop models that will inform on our investments in hydropower projects. 

Our investments in hydropower rely heavily on river hydrology and the hydrologist will play a key role in informing our investment decisions. 

While you will be based in Nairobi, a substantial amount of time is expected to be spent travelling in East Africa.

Skills and Experience:
  • Experience in working with government agencies and other institutions that have hydrological data.
  • Ability to gather and present data such as rainfall data and river gauge data.
  • Experience evaluating a river’s history flow data in the context of existing river flow data, rainfall data in the catchment area and vegetation.
  • Experiences in catchment hydrology.
  • Experience managing multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work closely within a team of engineers in the design of hydropower plants.
  • Experience using multiple sources of data to validate assumption.
  • Strong background and experience in statistics.
To fulfil these requirements, you possess:
  • A Master’s degree or higher in Hydrology
  • Relevant engineering professional certification required
  • Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (e. g. ArcGIS) and Microsoft Office (mainly Excel) and maybe AutoCAD and Microsoft Project
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong communication and intercultural skills
  • Excellent oral and written English, additional African language skills would be of advantage

Geologist – Kenya Chamber of Mines

This position will report directly to the Kenya Chamber of Mines CEO. 

The right candidate will be required to have a high level of responsibility and ability to communicate effectively.

Position duties will include but not limited to;
  • Regularly conducting active pit mapping, geological surveys and interpreting geology in order to inform and improve exploration in various areas;
  • Advising chamber members and small scale miners on mining activities and adherence to health and safety regulations;
  • Liaising with other geologists, government officials and mine workers on regulatory issues;
  • Keeping up to date with current geological research, advising the chamber on current trends;
  • Preparing reports and maps for the Kenya Chamber of Mines, providing technical information to the chamber regarding mining activities for use in its operations;
  • Interpreting geological information and data for the chamber, working closely with the CEO to provide technical clarifications as may be required.
  • Handling other specific assignments as given by the CEO.
Qualifications and training required
  • Bsc degree in Geology or Mining Engineering.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the geology of Kenya and mining activities.
  • Must be a registered geologist or eligible to become a registered geologist
  • 2-5 years working experience
  • Knowledge in any GIS system will be an added advantage
