The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), as the leading global environmental authority within the United Nations system, promotes the environmental dimension of sustainable development and serves as the authoritative advocate for the environment.
UNEP is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Executive Director of UNEP, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Based at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, the Deputy Executive Director works under the direction of the UNEP Executive Director and Under- Secretary-General of the United Nations and plays a key policy leadership and management role in the delivery of UNEP’s mandate.
The Deputy Executive Director provides advice and assistance to the Executive Director on substantive matters, strategic planning, management reform and the day-to-day running of UNEP. In particular, the Deputy Executive Director oversees programme coordination and monitoring mechanisms and plays a key role in maintaining UNEP’s relations with Governments, partners and stakeholders.
The Deputy Executive Director must have extensive experience and knowledge of the environmental and sustainable development agenda. She/he must be a strong leader and manager with highly developed diplomatic and public policy skills, including experience at the international level. Candidates must demonstrate a strong track record in organizational strategy and development, including results-based management.
