Summary:
To assist with running of the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Impact Study (PCVIS), to assess the direct and indirect protection against invasive pneumococcal disease achieved through vaccination and to monitor for serotype replacement disease, monitoring trends in invasive disease and other health-related factors, analysing results, and writing reports.

The post-holder will also have the opportunity to participate in the clinical service at Kilifi District Hospital.

Reporting Lines:
The post reports to the Principal Investigator (s).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the study research officer and field workers in conducting a community-based survey of serological immunity in the population. This will entail community engagement, procurement of supplies, organizing staff rotas, monitoring data completeness/quality, preparation of study operational procedures (SOP’s).
  • Ensure high quality data collection through regular confirmation that source documents are complete. Assist with regular competency assessments for the field team to ensure quality data.
  • Prepare and present research summaries to supervisors, international collaborators and sponsors.
  • Work with the Cluster Study Coordinator to ensure annual renewal of the study protocol.
  • Participate in the general clinical care of patients, which may include on call duties
  • Background reading and familiarisation of the study material relevant to the research project
  • Assist in the supervision of epidemiology students within KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme
  • Contribute to the academic life of the Programme through attendance and presentation at seminars, journal clubs etc.
  • Develop personal research projects within the scope of the PCVIS project
Skills and Competence:
Essential Qualifications:
  • Degree in Medicine and Surgery
  • Masters Degree in Epidemiology or Public Health, or equivalent experience
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
  • Publication or other evidence of strong academic capability
  • Fluency in epidemiological analysis and statistics
  • Ability to lead and work within in a team
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Computer literate and able to use Microsoft Office software
Preferable:
  • Demonstrable active interest and/or experience in clinical research
