Position: Physiotherapist (Chest Respiratory Physiotherapy specialist)

Job Context


Handicap International is present in Dadaab refugee camps since 2007 through its development department.

In response to the recent and massive influx of refugees, Handicap International’s Emergency Response Department has launched in August 2011 a holistic approach called Disability and Vulnerability Focal Point (DVFP) to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable newly arrived refugees.

The strategy of these DVFPs is to identify most vulnerable persons and enhance their access to essential basic and specific services through different mechanisms as well as through direct services’ provision.

Handicap International is also currently launching a new activity to respond to the needs of people suffering from ARI (Acute Respiratory Infections) especially amongst malnourished children.

After a period of suspension of most of our activities due to the degradation of the security context, we are now resuming our emergency activities with new modalities.

Global Objective of the Position

Under the responsibility of the Chest Respiratory Physiotherapist Project Manager and in close collaboration with the medical team of our partner organization in charge of health services in the refugee Camps, the Physiotherapist shall provide high quality Chest Respiratory Physiotherapy services to malnourished children and other patients suffering from ARI, put in place evaluation tools of this activity and report to the medical team as well as to his line manager.

Main Responsibilities
  • Participate in the design of the new activity and the building of partnerships with health stakeholders
  • Participate in the daily ward round with the medical teams from partners’ organization; sensitize the medical staff on chest respiratory physiotherapy and train them on identifying needs for chest respiratory physiotherapy amongst patients
  • Provide Chest Respiratory Physiotherapy sessions to malnourished children and other patients suffering from ARI according to the defined protocol. Ensure techniques used are appropriate to the needs of each patient.
  • Maintain up-to-date beneficiaries files and reports as well as evolution notes according to the line manager Manager’s requirements; Ensure reporting on all activities (qualitative and quantitative reporting)
  • Maintain work areas clean and secure and ensure a good maintenance of material at disposal;
  • Demonstrate an ethic and professional practice
  • Demonstrate willingness to improve professional competences and abilities to increase care quality.
  • Participate in camp level coordination meeting according to the direct Line Manager and/or Operations Manager’s requirement
  • Report to the direct Line Manager and/or Operations Manager on activities and challenges faced and to participate in the reflexion to improve our practices and project’s strategy
  • Ensure confidentiality of beneficiaries
Required Profile

Languages
  • English (good writing skills)
  • Somali required (both oral and written would be an asset)
Experience
  • Professional Physiotherapist with proven experience in Chest Respiratory Physiotherapy
  • At least 3 years of experience as a physiotherapist in hospital context including at least 2 years providing chest respiratory physiotherapy sessions
  • Significant and proven experience in using Forced Expiratory Technique (compulsory) amongst other chest respiratory physiotherapy techniques
