Background
DRC
Horn of Africa & Yemen (HOAY) is a fast growing regional programme within
the Danish Refugee Council.
Initial
humanitarian aid activities in the region were launched in Somaliland in 1997,
and later, in 2005, a regional office was established in Nairobi as a
coordination hub for the region, namely Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and
Yemen.
DRC
HOYA is further engaged in activities in the Great Lakes Region through the
Great Lakes Civil Society Project based in in Nairobi, where the regional
office is also hosting the Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat (RMMS).
Today,
more than 540 employees work with DRC HOAY, of which the vast majority is local
staff. DRC HOAY activities are funded by internal donors and governments, as
well as through means from national collections in Denmark.
Purpose
The
needs for strengthened internal and external communication and information
sharing have become increasingly imminent with the organizational growth and
expanded activities throughout the region.
The
position as regional information and communications adviser was established in
2011 with the objective of developing a regional communications strategy and
activities in support of this.
The
production of internal and external publications, press releases, and other
information material are among ongoing activities and more initiatives are
expected to be launched during 2012.
The
communications intern will be involved in work related to research, drafting
and facilitating these initiatives, as well as dissemination of publications
and other practical tasks.
Key
Responsibilities
- Undertake
desk research on topics related to the DRC internal monthly update
- Research
and drafting of articles and fact sheets for various DRC publications and
platforms
- Develop
case stories for use on DRC communications platforms
- Dissemination
of publications
- Assist
in administrative tasks
Reporting
Arrangements
Reports
to Regional Information & Communications Advisor.
Duration:
Starts
in June 2012, for 3 months with possibility of extension to 6 months
General
Commitments:
DRC
has a Humanitarian Accountability Framework, outlining its global

Person
Specifications
- Educational
background within Journalism/Graphic design
- Experience
in writing of journalistic products – articles, case stories
- Experience
with layout and graphic design
- Proactive
self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Flexible,
enthusiastic and willingness to learn from others.
- Ability
to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- An
understanding of humanitarian issues in the Horn of Africa region.
