Position Description
The Africa Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) supports the Kenya Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MOPHS), Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP).
The
Laboratory Advisor, under the direct supervision of the Director – FELTP, will
provide laboratory technical assistance to FELTP. The position will
receive administrative supervision and the employment contract from AFENET.

I. Technical Support
- Provide expert technical assistance to facilitate the implementation of the laboratory component of the Kenya FELTP.
- Serve as focal point and liaison between key laboratory systems stakeholders to implement the laboratory component of FELTP.
- Through human capacity development, strengthen laboratory support to MOPHS for surveillance of infectious, zoonotic, and chronic diseases and detection of outbreaks.
- Assist MOPHS with planning and implementation for laboratory system strengthening activities including through field epidemiologic investigations.
- Prepare technical manuscripts and periodic reports on projects and training efforts for program marketing both within the country and internationally.
II.
Training
- Develop curriculum and conduct courses in epidemiology, surveillance, outbreak investigation, biostatistics, among others, along with university faculty, MOH staff, and other guest lecturers.
- Collaboratively develop and implement an integrated laboratory – epidemiology training plan.
- Prepare field sites for FELTP laboratory resident site placements.
- Serve as team leader/supervisor for applied field projects of FELTP laboratory participants.
- With MOPHS, develop trainee selection and field site selection guidelines and monitor trainee placements.
- Supportively supervise FELTP trainees during field investigations and other FELTP related projects and coursework.
- Train on-site field supervisors.
Qualifications:
Required
- Degree in medical technology (or other laboratory science degree)
- Minimum five years of progressive work experience in clinical laboratory setting(s).
- Formal training and field experience in epidemiology.
- Experience training laboratory scientists and technicians; laboratory curriculum development.
- Experience managing operations in a clinical or public health laboratory.
- Preferred – Doctoral degree in laboratory sciences; Master’s of Public Health or equivalent degree; 8+ years experience in international public health training.
- Preferred – Kenyan national.
