The Population Council is seeking a dynamic candidate to fill the post of a Grants and Contracts Financial Accountant

The suitable candidate will support Project Managers in accurate grants and contracts financial tracking, recording and reporting, provide data for use in the internal and external financial reporting, and ensuring the organization’s compliance with grants and contracts financial reporting requirements.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Processes and posts payments including preparation of various supporting schedules; 
  • prepares and maintains internal documents to support financial reports; monitors spending performance, ensures that all financial reports are filed with the applicable Project Managers on a timely basis;
  • reviews “burn rate” on projects; assures appropriate explanations for variances on budget versus expenditure reports and notifies the Program Manager ; 
  • works closely with project staff to resolve and follow up on any financial issues ;
  • maintains up-to-date, accurate financial records on all grants and contracts managed out of Kenya office ; 
  • supports the Project Managers on the budget management throughout the life of the projects; 
  • maintains up-to-date grant and contract files and assures appropriate documents are available assists in the financial monitoring of sub-awards to sub-recipients, ensures the completion of closeout process for grants and contracts; and
  • participates in start-up workshops for new projects.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Accounting or Finance. 
  • Accounting professional qualification.
  • Over three years experience in broad range of accounting and financial functions in a Not-for-profit
    environment. 
  • Experience in accounting and reporting of major donor’s grants and contracts.
    Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Financial analytical skills, attention to detail, and strong work ethics. 
  • Capacity to work under pressure, prioritize multiple tasks, and meet inflexible deadlines. 
  • Proficiency in computer software particularly Microsoft office and accounting software packages. 
  • Positive attitude and desire to be a part of a diverse team.
