Review and Documentation of the
Consequences of the 2007 Post General Election Violence
Background
Kenya held the fourth multiparty General
Election on 27th December, 2007. The dispute that followed the
announcement of the result of that election by the Election Commission of Kenya
(ECK) on 30th December, 2007 quickly degenerated into an unprecedented
sevenweek long spate of violence in the Coast, Nairobi, Nyanza, Rift Valley and
Western Provinces.
The conflict led to an estimated loss of
1,200 lives, dislocation of about 301,000 people, destruction of property,
heightened ethnic hatred and general destruction of social and economic life.
UNDP as a long term development partner played a crucial role in facilitating
and ensuring peace negotiations, mobilizing Development Partners and recovery
efforts.
As Kenya prepares for the forth coming
election in March 4, 2013, it is very important as part of peace advocacy and
civic education that the effects of the 2007 general elections are documented
as a cautionary measure against repetition.
Objective
Assessment of the impact of the
post-election on the lives of the affected population.
