Call for Expression of Interest: Journalism Facilitator

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which was founded in 1992 and registered in Kenya in 1994 with a mandate to entrench human rights and democratic values in the society. 

The KHRC envisions a human rights state and society and outlines its mission as to foster human rights, democratic values, human dignity and social justice. 

This vision and mission are driven by the goal of enhancing human rights centred governance at all levels from community to international levels. 
 

Background: KHRC works at community level with human rights networks (HURINETS) across Kenya and links community, national and international human rights concerns.  

One of the key aspects of this work is to give the community human rights advocates a voice through the community newspaper called Mizizi Ya Haki, a biannual human rights advocacy tool whose content ids generated by the community concerns.
 

To this end the KHRC is seeking to engage the services of a Journalist Facilitator to conduct a two-day training to the main contributors for the Mizizi ya Haki paper. 
 

Objective: The objective of the training is to strengthen  the  Mizizi ya Haki  newspaper as an alternative advocacy mouthpiece and ultimately strengthen  the KHRC’s media programme in light of a shrinking democratic space and where the media and the no the civil society are not as strong allies in the quest for a democratic and free society.  

The success of the training will be measured with an outcome of increase in the number and quality of  content  and the frequency of Mizizi newspaper annually.

Expectations

• The Journalism facilitator will assist with the design and adaptation of core journalism training workshop( to specific country contexts, create training and reference materials for the workshops and for the citizen journalists to continue using on the job afterwards,
• Carry out a situation analysis of the current modus operandi of the production processes of the in order to design and improvement plan for the paper.
• Conduct reporting skills workshops, and provide individual assessments of participating journalists.
• Increase understanding among local citizen journalists of human rights and human development issues (e.g., poverty reduction, democratic governance, crisis prevention and recovery, environment and energy, and/or HIV/AIDS).
• Help to develop the skills of community members as citizen journalists able to produce acceptable journalistic reports as correspondents capable of  developing  independent, legally protected, professionally managed, and economically viable news media including photography considered essential to political and economic progress and vital for democratic processes.
• Provide coaching, facilitation , team development, whole systems analysis, and process reengineering for the Mizizi Ya Haki production team.
• Develop the instructional materials to meet the requirements of the KHRC’s Media and Communications department and the Hurinets with transferable concepts in a training of trainers’ format.
• Produce an evaluation assessment for the effectiveness of citizen  training

Knowledge and Experience

• Experience in training local journalists in Kenya;
• Experience in rights-based approach to journalism
• Extensive knowledge of and experience in journalism and international media development;
• Understanding of how to operate in systems where press freedoms are constrained;
• Fluency in English required, and Kiswahili, strongly preferred;
• Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning styles, participatory training design, group dynamics, interactive learning methods, systems theory and quality improvement processes,
• Skills in advanced leadership coaching, conflict resolution, group process facilitation, organization communications processes
• Skills in working with rural-based community groups
• High quality verbal and written communication
• Ability to deliver high quality training both online and onsite
• Corporate training experience

Desirable

• Knowledge and/or experience in drafting and enforcement of constitutional and other legal guarantees for free media in post-conflict societies and  emerging democracies
• Knowledge of integration of traditional and new media

Education/Training

• A degree in journalism or communications preferred.  A diploma in journalism with five years of relevant journalism experience is acceptable;
• Training in human rights reporting
