Invitation for Expression of Interest

Combined YWE and CBO Models Toolkit Development

TechnoServe Background

TechnoServe was founded 46 years ago on the premise that the key to ending poverty is business, and that poor people themselves are the solution to transforming their own lives and communities.

Our mission is to work with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. Our success is measured by increased financial benefits for the people with whom we engage.

The benefits enable them to improve their resilience and reduce their poverty.  Since its founding, TechnoServe has worked in more than 40 countries and helped more than 10 million men, women and children lift themselves out of poverty through the creation and support of sustainable businesses and profitable farms.

Since 2009, TechnoServe through the YWE program has increased economic, social and human assets of over 9,000 disadvantaged girls aged 14 to 24  and  living in the informal settlements of Kenya.

The Young Women in Enterprise program addresses in an integrated manner poverty, social isolation and lack of opportunity, attacking both the root and the symptoms of the problem.

Linking girls in social networks, introducing them to concepts of entrepreneurship, financial literacy and employability, providing them with opportunities to acquire practical business skills, and supporting them in their business start-up activities, helps disadvantaged adolescent girls harness their talents to catalyze change in their communities. As a result, girls increase their savings and spend more money on food, education and health.

As a sustainability measure and a way to transition the girls to independence, over the last one year, TechnoServe has facilitated the formation, registration and development of six girl run and managed Community Based Organizations (CBOs) in five major informal settlements of Nairobi.

The CBOs are the safe spaces and the main avenue for girl’s economic empowerment, training, and linkages to jobs and business opportunities.

They also acts as a networking forum and a resource center where girls can receive other support services such as HIV and AIDS messaging, Reproductive health information, skills training, group savings and lending, fundraising, linkages to employment, markets and finances, exhibitions and business support.

Toolkit: TechnoServe would like to document both the YWE model and CBO model into a toolkit.

The program has developed a draft toolkit for the YWE model, but the CBO model has not yet been documented. TechnoServe is therefore seeking to develop a combined toolkit of the two models into one compelling toolkit that will be shared to donors and stakeholders.

To develop the toolkit, TechnoServe is now searching for an organization or individual who will review and revise the comprehensive draft YWE toolkit and develop a completely new toolkit for the CBO model that will inform future girls’ programming.

Tasks
  1. Read and understand the YWE model and how it has evolved to the CBO model.
  2. Read draft toolkit and in discussion with TechnoServe develop a work plan for refining the toolkit and developing the CBO toolkit.
  3. Clearly illustrate how the program activities and results impacted the program beneficiaries and their households and their communities, thus demonstrating the program significance to girls in Kenya.
  4. Identify and develop powerful selected girl’s success stories to form part of the toolkit.
  5. Identify and use best practice format for a toolkit for a captivating read by the intended audience. This will include working on graphics, design layout, high quality photographs and captions.
  6. Package the presentation for publication and website posting.
Deliverables
  1. A soft PDF copy of the YWE toolkit document that is printable material on or before 30th June 2014.
  2. A hard copy of the final document
  3. A publishable document.
  4. Originals of all photos, graphics and captions developed for the toolkit
