conservation organization, Kenya Country Office (KCO), is seeking to recruit:
Project Officer - Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)
To be based in Lamu, Kenya.
Under the supervision of the Coastal Kenya Programme Coordinator, the Project Officer’s major functions will be:

Under the supervision of the Coastal Kenya Programme Coordinator, the Project Officer’s major functions will be:
- to ensure that the Lamu Seascape ESD project is effectively implemented;
- provide advice and collaboration as appropriate to the Coordinator and as required under the umbrella of the overall SIDA-funded ESD Programme;
- participate in strategic partnership building at the programme level in liaison with Programme Coordinator, Lake Victoria Catchment Environmental Education Programme (LVCEEP) and other relevant players identified in the project document;
- fundraising for programme activity implementation;
- implements effective programme organizational/management structures, policies, and processes;
- ensures that the project technical standards and reporting requirements are met.
Major
duties will include but not limited to:
- Liaising with colleagues, teachers and community groups on the design and implementation of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development programmes for various beneficiaries especially teachers, pupils, students and development workers;
- coordinate other Lamu Sea/Landscape personnel (WWF and partners) to develop and implement a broad environmental awareness and education programme, with full participation of the target communities to bring about tangible benefits from changes in their habits and attitudes as a result of the programme;
- organize training workshops and build the capacity of stakeholders and schools on EE and ESD;
- research necessary information and develop concepts for programme implementation and fundraising purposes;
- research and develop educational programmes and resources for schools children, adults, families, community groups or visitors to sites of special conservation interest;
- develop awareness materials on thematic issues for publication in liaison with the KCO Communications Officer and other relevant staff;
- in collaboration with the CKP coordinator, develop TORs for consultancy work in the programme and guide consultants on necessary programme implementation;
- develop relevant information for posting on KCO website and for contribution to WWF-ESARPO/KCO occasional newsletters and other communication materials;
- develop quality technical reports on project implementation;
- participate in relevant conservation meetings and workshops in the programme area and develop papers, reports and presentations/talks as necessary;
- provide advice on pertinent ESD/conservation issues in the programme area;
- identify lessons learned within the WWF network that are relevant to ESD that could help improve implementation of other projects; develop proposals and fundraise for further programme implementation;
- build partnerships with diverse stakeholders for successful project implementation;
- organizing events and activities to raise awareness of conservation issues;
- training others, such as teachers, in the use of resources and in delivering educational sessions;
- recruit, supervise and work with volunteers;
- act as a point of contact for teachers, educationists and colleagues, responding to requests for information on educational issues;
- manage budgets for projects and educational programmes; carrying out risk assessments, particularly for outdoor activities.
The
incumbent must possess:
- holder of a university degree in Conservation Science, Natural Resource/Environmental Management, Project Management, Education and/or Development Science, or related field;
- post-graduate qualifications in education and/or training would be an added advantage;
- at least 3 years experience in a similar position;
- technical proficiency in conservation and environmental or natural resource management;
- strong communication skills (written and oral), good team leader/player with strong interpersonal skills;
- excellent knowledge of Kiswahili and local cultures are added advantages;
- skilled in communication, liaison and in relationship building and maintenance;
- good skills in project planning, proposal writing, management, implementation and evaluation as well as experience of working with a diversity of donors;
- strong analytical skills; strong vocational interest in nature conservation;
- a working knowledge of financial management, especially of projects;
- excellent inter-personal skills, with the ability to network and to develop and maintain strong relationships at all levels, both internally and with local communities, government agencies and the NGO/CBO community;
- adaptable, flexible, able to take initiative and prioritize among competing demands;
- excellent oral and written communications skills in English; and
- adherence to WWF’s values, which are: Optimistic, Engaging, Determined and Knowledgeable;
