Job Purpose / Objective: The International Rescue Committee – Kenya Program with funding from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implements the Partnership on AIDS (POA Project), a HIV & AIDS Prevention Project in Turkana County in the North - Rift region of Kenya.

IRC wishes to recruit a Key Populations Nurse to provide bio - medical services to key populations in Lodwar, Lokichar, Kalokol and Lokichoggio.

Working closely with other key program staff with direct supervision from the Key Populations and HTC Officer, the key objective of the Key population nurse  is to ensure the timely, confidential, professional and effective provision of bio - medical services to key populations.
Key Responsibilities

Project Implementation, Monitoring & Reporting

  • Manage the day - to - day running of the Key Populations Clinic.
  • Provide a wide range of Reproductive Health and HIV related services to Female Sex Workers through both static and outreach services. The service package will include:
  1. Preventive behavioral skills education including condom use education
  2. Condoms and Lubricants distribution.
  3. HIV Testing & Counseling./ RESPECT – K Counseling Sessions
  4. Screening and Treatment of STI’s.
  5. Cervical Cancer Screening & Referral.
  6. Provision of Family Planning services
  7. TB Screening & Referral.
  • Provision of Clinical Care for sexual assault and Gender Based Violence (GBV) survivors.
  • Support the KP/HTC Officer in planning and organizing meetings, counseling and behavioral sessions with the targeted beneficiaries.
  • Contribute technical, professional and experiential knowledge and skills to enrich the IRC HIV program
  • Documentation and management of client records, files and clinic / MOH registers.
  • In liaison with the HIS team, ensure monthly key populations data is captured, collected, verified, collated, analyzed and interpreted, and analytical quantitative and qualitative program performance reports generated.
  • Documentation of Lessons learnt, Challenges and Best Practices.
Quality Control & Improvement
  • Ensure adherence to the National Key Populations (MARPs) minimum package of bio - medical services and the Quality Management Framework for HTC in Kenya (NASCOP, 2010) as well as that of the National Guidelines on the implementation of RESPECT interventions.
Supervision & Leadership
  • Support the Key Populations / HTC Officer in identifying staffing, programmatic and technical capacity gaps that impact on program implementation.
  • Technically supervise and monitor performance of Key populations HTC Counselor.
Integration, Networking & Coordination
  • With direction and support from the KP & HTC Officer, liaise with MOH in maintaining a consistent supply of clinic supplies, test kits and other consumables.
  • Explore opportunities of enhanced integration with the Women Protection and Empowerment (WPE) project.
  • Support MoH in provision of clinical services at Lodwar District Hospital when called upon or during times of emergency.
  • With support from the KP/HTC Officer, identify and utilize networking and linkages opportunities which are beneficial to the community, IRC and its programs.
Required Qualifications:
  • Diploma / BSc Degree in Nursing.(Registered  Nurse with the Nursing Council of Kenya)
  • Qualified HTC Counselor.- Certified  by NASCOP./ LVCT
  • Trained in RESPECT – K Evidence Based Intervention.
  • Has undergone trainings in Key Populations (MARP’s) programming
  • Trained in Reproductive Health, Behavior Change Communication (BCC) and / or other HIV related Trainings e.g. Peer Education, Peer Counseling or HIV&AIDS Management
  • Ms Office suite proficiency.
Required Experience & Competencies:
  • A minimum of three years working experience in key populations (MARPs) Programming and provision of Reproductive health services among young people.
  • Demonstrated experience in project activities planning, implementation, Monitoring and Report writing.
  • Training in syndromic management of STI’s, Opportunistic Infections, Cervical Cancer Screening is added advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with PEPFAR, MoH and other community based HIV Prevention Projects.
  • Excellent communication, rapport building and listening skills with
  • Ability to create good rapport with young, vulnerable women in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Willingness to work in a challenging environment.
  • Team player.
