Vacancy: Head of Geothermal Development

The Company: Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) is the leading power producer generating about 80 per cent of power consumed in Kenya. It is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and is 70% Government owned.
 

The Strategy: The Company operates in a liberalized and regulated single-buyer market competing with Independent Power Producers. The forecasted national peak demand to meet Kenya Vision 2030 objectives is 15,000MW by year 2030. 

KenGen is going to be the major player in attaining this national target. In alignment with this national goal, KenGen has set out an ambitious operational and growth strategy, to grow its capacity from the current 1,236MW to 3,000MW by 2018. 

Launched in 2007 as Good-to-Great (G2G) Transformation Strategy, the Company has completed the first horizon (2008-2012) and is now on the second horizon (2013-2018). 

In order to meet the planned growth and sustain momentum of the ongoing transformation plan in line with its corporate strategy, the Board wishes to identify and recruit suitable candidates for the following listed executive position:

Job Profile
 

Reporting to the Managing Director & CEO, the person will:

• Lead, oversee and manage the geothermal resource development and operations function and actively participate in the development of KenGen’s corporate strategy.
• Develop accountability structures, oversee periodic reporting of drilling and Geothermal projects and monitor the performance indicators for the Geothermal Development Division.
• Manage a large number of staff and cross functional teams in the area including Supply chain, ICT., Finance, Human Resources and Administration Services
• Coordinate, monitor and direct management and maintenance of reservoir and steam field resources.
• Oversee power generation in Geothermal operations ensuring timely effective and efficient revenue generating activities, safety adherence and security of the assets within the plants.
• Develop and coordinate the implementation of environmental and social impact assessment frameworks.
• Oversee the provision of research and consultancy services, including the hiring of expertise and equipment to local and international clients.
• Coordinate implementation of resettlement action plans for geothermal projects in conjunction with the Regulatory & Corporate Affairs division.
• Manage the relationship between the company and local communities and stakeholders on issues related to the Geothermal Development.
• Be the contact person for all visitors (local & international) to the area and is expected to coordinate all the service providers including contractors.

Person Profile

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Earth Sciences, Business or any other relevant field.
• Masters degree in Engineering, Earth Science or Business related field is an added advantage.
• Must be a registered engineer with EBK and a member of I.E.K or member of a relevant professional body.
• At least Ten (10) years experience at senior management level in plant operations or geothermal technology related roles.

The successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate distinguished leadership with a track record of achievements in the public or private sector backed with a minimum Ten (10) years in senior management roles and be a Transformative and Change leader, keen on detail and strict deadlines with undisputable respect and integrity. 

He/ She will be required to possess strong people management and inter personal skills.

Introduction: The Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) was established in Nairobi, Kenya in 1975 under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. 

It is an intergovernmental organization and currently has twenty (20) member States, namely: Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

RCMRD’s main mission is to promote sustainable development through generation, application and dissemination of geo-information and allied ICT services and products in the member States and beyond. 

The main Geoinformation technologies promoted by RCMRD are Geographic Information System (GIS), Satellite Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS) and Information Technology (IT). 

RCMRD is also vigorously involved in the promotion of the development of National Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in its member states and in Africa.
 

Since establishment, RCMRD has been instrumental in capacity development in resource surveys, mapping, remote sensing, GIS and natural resources assessment and management in Africa. RCMRD implements projects on behalf of its member States and development partners as well as undertaking advisory services, research and development activities.
 

RCMRD is desirous to fill the following position:
 

Remote Sensing Officer (Pl/P2)

Duties and responsibilities:
 

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Remote Sensing, Geo-information Systems and Mapping, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:

• Lead the remote sensing and environmental management section in supervising and implementing projects and capacity development activities.
• Initiate Work Plans and prepare Budgets
• Identify opportunities and write and submit project proposals for funding
• Provide advisory services and technical support in the integrated use of remote sensing in member States
• Promote the application and use of remote sensing in member States and to other stakeholders
• Carry out research and project services in the application and use of remote sensing technologies for sustainable development
• Ensure quality control and assurance of production work; and
• Assess the capacity development needs of member states in the field of remote sensing and earth observation and prepare/review training curriculum and training materials

Requirements:
 

The ideal candidate must have:

• Msc in Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Geomantics, Environmental Science and GIS with at least 5 years practical work experience in the field of Remote Sensing, Photogrammetry, Geomantics, Environmental Management and GIS. Or;
• BSc in Geomatics, Earth Science, Environmental Science or Geography with at least 10 years practical work experience as Remote Sensing Expert.

Contract duration: Three (3) years renewable.

Remuneration
 

Salary Scale: The salaries for the above position are consolidated and are in the range of: PI/P2 : USD$ 23,685 - USD$ 43,841 p.a.

Entry point for the position will be determined by qualifications and experience.
 

Benefits: These include contributory provident fund with both parties contributing 7% of monthly basic salary towards the fund, gratuity at the rate of 10% of annual basic salary based on successful completion of the contract and a staff contributory group medical scheme to a maximum of five (5) family members.

Key Responsibilities:

 

• Assist to maintain custody of the national measurement standards in the assigned measurement field;
• Assist to maintain the traceability of the national measurement standards to the International System of Units (SI);
• Provide calibration services in the respective measurement fields;
• Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a laboratory quality management system (QMS) in line with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard;

• Assist in the achievement and maintenance of international recognition of the national measurement standards and the laboratory’s calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs);

Job grade: KS 7

Minimum academic qualifications: Bachelor of Science (Mechatronic engineering)

Competencies:

Capable of programming machines such as programmable logic controllers, (PLCs) working knowledge of Electrical and Mechanical Systems, working knowledge of control systems and able to design mechatronic systems.

Analytical skills, Proactive, Results oriented, Integrity, Innovative.
