Research / Communications Assistant

Duties

As Research / Communications Assistant, the successful applicant will perform the following duties:
  • Develop and maintain internal High Commission databases;
  • Update and make improvements to the High Commission’s website as required;
  • Assist in arranging public diplomacy activities / events, producing publications, and reaching out to relevant stakeholders and partners on issues of importance to Australia;
  • Conduct research and report on regional and domestic economic issues affecting the High Commission’s countries of accreditation (which might include coverage of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Rwanda, Burundi and Sudan), including identifying areas of potential engagement by Australia;
  • Support the work of relevant committees within the High Commission that determine Australian Government assistance for various project proposals, for example for human rights grants;
  • Assist senior High Commission staff and Australian visitors with arranging programs and appointments;
  • Monitor transnational / global issues as they affect the East African region (possibly including the environment and security issues);
  • Other tasks as appropriate.
Written applications (a cover letter of maximum two pages, and CV of maximum two pages) should address the following selection criteria:
  • High level IT skills, including familiarity with websites and contacts databases (preferably a formal IT qualification).
  • Strong organisational skills.
  • High level verbal and written communication skills.
  • High level liaison and coordination skills.
  • French language skills would be highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated initiative, and the capacity to work under pressure.
  • Interest in, and familiarity with, Kenyan and regional political and economic issues.
  • Experience in research work, particularly in the political and economic fields.
  • A postgraduate university degree in a relevant field.
Salary

Starting monthly salary will be in the range of Kes107,902 – 149,086 depending on qualifications and experience. This is a 2-year contract position with an option to extend.
