African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is the leading international conservation

AWF seeks to recruit a highly motivated and results oriented Director for its Maasai Steppe Heartland to be based in its offices in Makuyuni and Arusha, Tanzania, with significant time spent in the field.
This senior position will be responsible for overall leadership, management and accountability for the activities and performance in AWF's conservation program in the Heartland and is open to Tanzania nationals.
The Maasai Steppe Heartland is an important biodiversity area and forms part of the northern tourism circuit of Tanzania with parks such as Tarangire and Lake Manyara. It predominately occupied by Maasai pastoralists.
The successful candidate will be a highly effective leader in the conservation sector able to manage large programs with ecological, social, political, cultural and economic complexities.
He/she will also be principally responsible for managing the Scaling up Conservation and Livelihood Efforts in northern Tanzania (SCALE) program funded by USAID Tanzania that seeks to deliver transformational conservation and economic impacts in the wider Tarangire-Manyara-Kilimanjaro-Natron ecosystem (TMKNE) through innovation, the replication of lessons learned, and building the capacity of local actors.
He/she should have demonstrated experience in the establishment of wildlife management areas, the national policy for managing wildlife outside protected areas for community benefit. He/she is expected to be results oriented and able to lead a team of highly qualified professionals to meet program targets and goals and achieve results.
The successful candidate will also work with the Regional Director and other senior staff to design heartland strategies and provide leadership to implement field-based conservation actions.

Required qualifications:
- Post graduate qualification (PhD or MSc) in natural sciences, social science, project management, economics or another field related to conservation;
- Minimum 10+ years of proven senior leadership, project management, administrative and field experience in conservation;
- Experience and a proven success record in working and implementing projects in Tanzania or the wider East Africa; proficiency in both English and Kiswahili (spoken and written) is required;
- Proven experience leading and managing large complex projects budgets;
- Results focused orientation with proven track record of delivering and reporting results, and ensuring compliance with USAID and other donors requirements, and possesses sound judgment and strong decision making skills
- Demonstrated ability to build capacity of multiple stakeholders to engage in landscape planning and management;
- outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to build coalitions, negotiate, and manage conflict situations; and work with different cultures found in northern Tanzania
- Sound understanding of and experience implementing landscape-level conservation approaches;
- familiarity with innovative methods, including community conservation and conservation enterprises; and integration of conservation with health, population, agriculture and gender dimensions.
- Outstanding communication skills with ability to clarify vision and strategy; good report writing skills and working knowledge of computers and MS Office software package;
- Proven experience in fundraising and donor liaison.
