Economic Assessment of Kenya’s Environment and Natural Resources

The Poverty Environment Initiative (PEI) aims to support the integration of environment into development policy, planning and budgeting processes in Kenya.

The PEI responds to the identified need by Government on the importance of the environment in achieving its economic growth and poverty reduction goals.

Kenya’s current long term development strategy - the Kenya Vision 2030 aims at “transforming Kenya into a globally competitive and prosperous middle income country by 2030” and acknowledges that the desired rate of economic growth of 10% per annum is dependent on the key sectors of agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and energy, all of which heavily rely on the exploitation of natural resources and the environment.

It is generally recognized that economic assessment of ecosystems and natural resources can play
an important role in emphasizing the full costs of the destruction and degradation of nature, as well as providing benefits and incentives for protecting the natural resource base.

However, it should be noted that such assessment and requisite ‘marketization’ of natural resources as unregulated market forces, have been a major contributing factor to environmental degradation.

To support evidence based policy-making and investment, PEI Kenya intends to undertake an economic assessment and analysis of the country’s environment and natural resources sector.

This will provide evidence on the costs of environmental degradation, assess the risks of a “business as usual” approach to natural resource management in the country, identify more sustainable policy options and determine the costs and benefits of sustainable policy interventions.

It is in this context that UNDP is seeking the services of two (2) individual consultants (one Lead Consultant and one Expert) to undertake this assessment.
