Maseno
University was initially established in 1990 as a Constituent College of Moi
University and became a full-fledged University eleven years later in February
2001. The University has since evolved into a recognized institution within the
region and beyond.
Maseno University is located 30km West of Kisumu City in Maseno Township (along the Kisumu-Busia highway) and which is the major urban centre within Maseno Division. It lies at the borders of Kisumu and Vihiga counties serving a wide and diverse population. The township has grown rapidly since the establishment of Maseno University College.
The changes that have been taking place at Maseno University have accelerated in the last few years. This has been as a result of increase in the number of academic programmes with subsequent rise in the number of students.
These numbers are projected to rise to over 16,000 students in the next five years with a commensurate rise in the number of staff. This will lead to pressure on the existing facilities within the institution and the neighbouring environment.
It is necessary that for continued growth of the University, there must be an instrument in place that will act as a guide to ensure systematic development without conflict on uses and creating an institution that works as a functional unit.
It has therefore become necessary to develop a Maseno University Master Plan which will give a general framework for the layout of physical development of the University while enabling the institution translate its strategies into functional spatial development.
Scope
The Maseno University Master Plan (MSUMP) will inter alia address the following matters:
