Ujamaa Center, an NGO based in Mombasa, works with peoples and communities in the coastal counties to enhance popular participation ¡n socio-economic and political processes, community based decision making, and efficient and sustainable use of natural resources.

The principal activity of the Organization continues to be that of building social capital in order to enhance popular participation of local communities in socio-economic and political processes, community control and ownership of natural resources and effective participation and involvement in decision making processes.

The Center is implementing the project “Mobilising People-based Rural Organizations for Equitable Access to Land and Other Natural Resources Project” that seeks to secure the policy space to develop options that advance community interests in the management of land and other natural resources in Kilifi, Malindi and the Yala Wetland.

Job Purpose
  • To spearhead a results-oriented management approach that proactively serves, contributes to and promotes the vision, strong ideology, credo and strategic goals of Ujamaa and thus ensure that operational policies, practices and procedures are adhered to, the human resource management plan is implemented and staff deliver on their mandates.
Job Description
  • Lead the operational, human resources and administrative functions of Ujamaa Center
  • Ensure efficiency, effectiveness and excellence in internal processes
  • Implement and improve the human resource management plan
  • Promote the development of key policies and regulations for the effective management of Ujamaa
Main Duties
  • Take a hands on/active part in team planning and day to day operations to ensure that organisational targets and objectives are successfully met.
  • Participate in the development of internal systems and processes, undertake line management, supervision and coaching of Ujamaa staff
  • Represent the Organization to external organizations
  • Contribute to corporate strategic planning, objective setting and monitor effectiveness of field activities and modify plans as necessary.
  • Take responsibility for assessing skills, personal circumstances and qualities of applicants and volunteers who apply to be recruited by the Center
  • Provide Support to the Program team in order to foster professionalism, efficiency and timeliness
  • Maintain the physical office and logistics related to Ujamaa activities
  • Ensure sound knowledge management
  • Procure supplies & equipment, direct vendor interface and facilitate the maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide orientation to new staff and volunteers and ensure adherence to the performance management system.
  • Coordination of meetings, appointments & internal training.
  • Monitor compliance with the guidelines and standard operating procedures of Ujamaa
  • Draft documents, such as job descriptions and job announcements.
  • Deputize the Executive Director
Qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position
  • Experience in civil society and the social justice
  • Advanced degree in social sciences, humanities,
Essential Skills, personal attributes and Experience
  • Substantial professional experience in the field of administration, human resource development and management
  • Broad understanding of program development with the ability to conceptualize programmatic ideas and strategies;
  • Strong managerial, organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Have demonstrated ability, initiative, drive, passion and competence in institution management
  • Must be computer literate with excellent communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Solid Strategic Planning experience, Excellent writing and Analytical skills
  • Team worker, able to work with minimum supervision and attentive to detail
  • Excellent skills in public relations and capacity to cultivate strong networks with relevant stakeholders
  • Team player and flexible but firm, principled, decisive and courageous in character
  • Identify him/herself with the mission, vision and values of Ujamaa
  • Display of intercultural sensitivity and respect in dealing with others.
