Standard Group comprises, The Standard Newspapers, Game Yetu, The County
Weekly, KTN, Radio Maisha, PDS, Standard Digital and Think Outdoor Services.
The
Group is in the process of strengthening its Editorial function by recruiting
highly motivated, qualified, experienced and competent individuals to the
following positions.
Sub Editors
The
Sub Editors will work closely with the editors to put together the newspaper
and ensure that stories are edited to house style and free of errors, and that
the presentation in terms of design and layout is appealing and conforms to
house style.
Roles
and Responsibilities
- To
edit stories for accuracy, facts, grammar and simplicity.
- To
edit pictures selected to go with particular stories.
- Write
headlines and captions.
- Lay
out pages and sign off for press.
Qualification,
Skills and Competencies
- University
degree with a bias in English or Mass Communication
- Training
in Journalism
- Minimum
of three years’ experience in sub editing.
- Well-developed
analytical skills.
- Ability
to make quick decisions and to improvise if necessary.
- Energy
and ability to work irregular hours.
- Excellent
communication and inter-personal skills.
Reporters
The
reporter will be expected to source, collect, write and submit stories/reports
and articles within set deadlines.
Role
of the Position
- To
go out on assignments, take notes, carry out interviews, check out facts
and submit stories within set deadlines
- To
research and collect background information required to make stories
complete
- To
brief the Editor fully on all assignments
- To
write and process the stories collected and to read back to ensure that
they are balanced, properly presented, free of error and in line with laid
down editorial policy and house-style
- To
follow news leads and to maintain close and effective contact with news
sources
- To
identify areas of improvement/ development in daily news reporting and to
make appropriate recommendations to the Editor
- To
observe the code of journalistic ethics
Qualification,
Skills and Competencies
- University
degree in Journalism or any other
- Minimum
2 years’ experience as a writer
- Ability
to identify and follow news leads
- Ability
to make quick decisions and to improvise if necessary
- Energy
and ability to work irregular hours
- Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills at all staff levels and at
community level
- High
degree of integrity to deliver
- Excellent
writing/presentation skills
Trainee Reporters
The
Trainees will be exposed to the Editorial function of the Group incumbent will
source, collect, write and submit stories/reports and articles within set
deadlines.
Qualifications
& Experience
- University
degree in Journalism or Mass Communication
- Advanced
computer literacy
- Ability
to identify and follow news leads
- Excellent
writing skills
Responsibilities
