Job Title: Steel Fixer
Summary: Steel fixer fit and secures the steel bars and mesh used to reinforce concrete on construction and engineering sites.
They may also work in pre-cast concrete plants, as well as in areas of pre-stressing, post-stressing and tensioning, using hydraulic jacks and tensioning mechanisms.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Setting out the work area following engineering plans
- Using hand and power tools to cut and bend bars or mesh
- Tying rebar (reinforcement bars) together with wire, clips or welds to build up cages or sections
- Fitting spacers and ‘chairs’ (supports)
- Fixing the formwork and shuttering used to hold setting concrete in place
- Joining cages and sections and Fixing steel to concrete bases
- Installing beams and pre-cast slabs
- Reading and interpreting working plans and steel lists for the job
- Making steel bars or meshing the required length by cutting them with bolt cutters, guillotines or power saws
- Assembling the reinforcing bars or mesh by welding, wiring or clipping into predetermined locations within the concrete
- Fabricating steel reinforcement such as beams, footing pads or special units
- Joining prefabricated units together for large sections of high rise or civil projects, and position the reinforcement ready for concrete pours.
Personal Requirements:
- At least a diploma in Civil engineering or Building and construction engineering.
- 2-3 years of work experience in similar role.
- Able to cope with the physical demands of the job.
- Able to work as part of a team.
