Vacancy: Protection Officer
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. The Horn of Africa and Yemen regional office is based in Nairobi with country programmes in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Yemen.
Purpose: The Protection Officer will support DRC’s child protection work in Somalia through technical support to the entire project team in preparation of reports, quality analysis, and further verification of data as well as follow up action points.
Key Responsibilities.
The Protection Officer will undertake the following specific organizational activities:
- Receive data from child protection officers, review quality and reliability and import into the main database,
- Maintain contact with child protection officers for data verification and other relevant information,
- Provide bi-weekly data updates to UNICEF,
- Draft monthly and quarterly reports,
- Undertake field visits related to trainings, meetings and evaluations as well as provide technical assistance to the child protection officers and protection programme in the field offices
- Support the coordination with members of the CPWG, GBV WG and other like-minded agencies in the exchange of information relating to Child Protection sector,
- Support trainings for child protection officers and implementation partners,
- Update project work plans and support the Child Protection Coordinator in ensuring project activities are implemented in compliance with the timelines,
- Take minutes during all project meetings and ensure timely sharing of action points and follow up,
- Support Grants Manager in the filing of all relevant programme and policy information,
- Attend CPWG and other relevant protection meetings on the Nairobi level on a needs basis.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Personal Specifications
Essential
- University degree, preferably in Human Rights, Law or related field from a recognized institution of higher learning.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience, within the field of protection, particularly in child protection.
- Experience in IT/Database management including CPMIS
- Proven knowledge of UN resolutions on children in armed conflict and preferably practical knowledge of working with these resolutions.
- Experience building capacity of partners and staff in monitoring and documenting child rights violations, draft analytical fact sheets
- Good report writing and analytical skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and in adverse conditions;
- Excellent communication skills, personable, calm and good sense of humour;
- Fluent in written and spoken English and Somali;
- Commitment to gender equity
Preferable
- Experience working with International NGO’s, UN agencies, line ministries and/or local authorities in migrants/refugee settings in complex emergencies;
- Knowledge of and willingness to travel to Somalia.
Terms and Conditions
- Location: Kenya based with regular travels to different locations in Somalia
- Contract: 7 months with possibility of extension contingent on availability of funds.
- Reporting: This position reports to the DRC Child Protection Coordinator
