icipe Laboratory Technician Job in Kenya (Thomas Odhiambo campus)

icipe is an intergovernmental organisation funded by government aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improved health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes, located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia.

icipe requires the services of a Laboratory Technician to work in the McKnight Foundation-funded Napier Grass Stunt Disease Project. This position is based at icipe Thomas Odhiambo campus (ITOC) in Mbita, South Nyanza.

The successful applicant will report to the Programme Coordinator.

Responsibilities

·       Conducting day-to-day laboratory activities which entail preparation and storage of reagents, and laboratory cleaning and waste disposal.

·       Providing laboratory support to students and visiting scientists.

·       Data collection and coding in both electronic and hard copy formats.

·       Report writing and updating the supervisor regularly.

·       Keeping an inventory of laboratory materials and initiating replacements as required.

·       Perform other duties as may be required.

Requirements

·       Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or equivalent.

·       Minimum 1 years’ experience conducting laboratory procedures, particularly in preparation of laboratory reagents, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), agarose gel electrophoresis and laboratory waste management.

·       Experience with techniques in DNA sequencing, DNA sequence analysis and AFLP genotyping an added advantage.

·       Must be computer literate and have good report writing skills.

·       Must possess good organisational skills.

·       Must have good communication and interpersonal skills.

·       Ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment is essential.
