Turkana
Integrated Programme
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion for the Millennium Development Goals 2011 - 2014
Call for bids Hydro geological Assessments and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in Turkana County
Background
Turkana is the poorest county in Kenya, with 94.9% of the population below the absolute poverty line.
The District has amongst the lowest coverage levels for water and sanitation in Kenya, estimated to be as low as 15% and 9% respectively compared to the national average of 31% and 59% respectively.
In response to the above, Oxfam GB, along with partners (Practical Action and IRC), secured funding from the EU for a three year project, 2011 – 2014 for WASH interventions in Turkana to help in closing some of the identified gaps with the aim of contributing towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
In 40 targeted communities, 40 boreholes will be drilled in order to address need for safe water in the communities. The 40 boreholes will particularly benefit women and children who are traditionally responsible for collecting water and other domestic work.
Therefore Oxfam, IRC and Practical Action seek the services of a suitable consultant to carry out geophysical, hydro-geological assessments and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), the result of which will be used to establish the most suitable sites for drilling as well as the most suitable means of drilling to minimize environmental degradation.
