EDC operates the Sudan Radio Service (SRS), which broadcasts objective news and information to Sudan and to Darfur, through its Darfur News and Information Service (DNIS).
The News Programming Adviser is responsible for partnering successfully with Chief of Party, Principal International Technical Adviser, home office project director and with Business Services, expatriate and local staff.
The News Programming Adviser will advise the DNIS news team and the DNIS and SRS drama teams, including:
· Assisting the COP and
other staff in developing an overall vision and direction for DNIS;
· Advising the DNIS
news team, particularly the DNIS news team coordinator;
· In collaboration with
Principal International Technical Adviser and the DNIS Coordinator, ensuring
that DNIS news meets SRS editorial standards;
· Assisting the DNIS
team in planning documentary programs, and ensuring that the programs meet SRS
editorial and technical standards;
· Developing and
enforcing editorial practices that promote fair, accurate reporting on any and
all nationally-important events and issues that impact Sudanese and South Sudanese
citizens;
· Ensuring that news
coverage planning is detailed, timely, and proactive;
· Mentoring and
training of the DNIS news team on investigative techniques, writing, etc;
· Expanding DNIS news
and current events program offerings;
· Advising on and/or
editing daily DNIS news stories for broadcast and publication on the SRS
website;
· Striving to maintain
SRS as the leading independent broadcast news outlet in Sudan and South Sudan;
· Increasing the reach
of Sudan Radio Service programming by strengthening existing partnerships with
local broadcasters and developing new partnerships with other news outlets;
· Managing new media
initiatives which promote and disseminate SRS news coverage (website, SMS,
electronic newsletters);
· Performing other
duties, as assigned.
The News Programming Adviser will be
based in Nairobi, Kenya, but will travel to Sudan, and, if necessary, to Chad
and other locations where Darfur refugees are located.

· Master’s degree or
above, or equivalent combination of training & education
· With Master’s degree,
5–8 years related experience, including a minimum of 5 years technical project
management or program development experience
· Specific technical
expertise relevant to the projects, programs and operations
· Outstanding
leadership skills
· Excellent analytical
skills and aptitude for details
· Capacity to work in
difficult conditions and function well under pressure
· Proficiency in
English required; proficiency in Arabic and local Darfur languages preferred
· International experience
required; experience in a developing country essential
· Solid background in
radio journalism
