Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International
IDEA) Representative in Kenya
International IDEA intends to open an office in Nairobi, Kenya.
Pending
the signing of the host-country agreement, International IDEA is seeking to
recruit a representative for the envisaged office.
This
position
is under International IDEA’s Africa Programme and reports to the Regional Director of the Africa
Programme.
The
person should be a Kenyan citizen and be available for an initial 12 months
assignment
starting on 1 September 2012 (non-negotiable).

Main functions of the post:
The main functions of the post are:
- To
represent International IDEA in Kenya so that IDEA is accepted as a
recognised partner that supports democratic institutions and processes.
- To
coordinate operations of the International IDEA office and project
implementation in Kenya.
- To
advise relevant Kenyan institutions and provide technical assistance.
- To
develop fundraising proposals.
Duties
and Responsibilities:
Overall supervision for the post will be under the Regional Director for Africa.
It
is expected that the incumbent will work with programmatic inputs and
directives from Senior Programme Managers based at HQ in regards to the
respective projects.
The incumbent performs the following duties:
- Represent
International IDEA in Kenya, with experience in working in democracy
building support and assistance, ability to analyse and understand the
political and democratic context in Kenya;
- Coordinates
the opening and operations of International IDEA’s Nairobi office and
project implementation;
- Maintains
a network among and is trusted by Kenyan political parties, the IEBC, the
Registrar of Political Parties, relevant governmental and non-governmental
institutions;
- Advises
relevant Kenyan institutions, facilitates technical cooperation and
support and engages in consensus building and dialogue initiatives.
- Actively
promotes and integrates the gender equality perspective into all
programming work aspects on planning, implementation, reporting,
monitoring and evaluation.
Qualifications,
Skills and Professional experience
- University
degree (preferably at post graduate level) in Political Science, Law,
Human Rights, Development or equivalent.
- Minimum
of ten (10) years experience working within the field of democracy support
or governance and preferably within one or several international
organizations;
- Relevant
experience in the areas of electoral processes, political parties and
parliaments, human rights, democracy and governance in Kenya.
