Project: Sustainable Livelihoods through Value Chain Development for Pastoral Communities in Turkana

About Oxfam in Kenya: Oxfam works with the most vulnerable communities in the dry and remote northern regions, and in the impoverished slums of the capital, Nairobi. Oxfam in Kenya works with others to alleviate poverty and inequality.

Oxfam envisages a Kenya in which each individual, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, or social standing, can access basic services, can fully participate and be heard, and can make free and informed choices to build sustainable livelihoods and resilience to external shocks.
About the Project: Turkana County is characterised by drought, flooding, and conflict. These natural and manmade shocks have a large impact on the lives and livelihoods of women and men living in these areas.

Oxfam together with its partners realizes the great need to enhance the livelihoods of the men and women through diversification of livelihoods. One such approach is through the Value Chain Project Funded by the EC.

The project aims to secure sustainable livelihoods and food security for poor women and men in Turkana through development of market opportunities and building local capacity to link with markets.

Specifically the project aims to develop Lake Turkana fish value chain from a business perspective, develop and strengthen producer business groups (PBGs) to enable them create and foster market linkages.

This is aimed at increasing the members’ income through value addition and also ensures their capacity is developed and services built can be applied to other value chains.
