Background on Umande Trust: Established in 2004, Umande Trust is a growing rights-based agency, which believes that modest resources can significantly improve access to basic urban services if human, financial, information and governance resources are strategically invested in support of community-led plans and actions.  

Our mission is to promote innovations that position bio-sanitation and related basic urban services as key drivers to sustainable urban development. 

Located in Kibera (Olympic Estate), Umande Trust is currently implementing (in partnerships), a menu of bio-sanitation, pricing innovations, money management, sustainable urban environmental and access to justice programmesin Nakuru (Kwa Rhonda and Kaptembwa), Kisumu (Obunga, Nyalenda, Manyatta and Bandani) and the Big 5 peoples’ settlements of Korogocho, Mukuru, Kangemi, Kibera, Kangemi/Kawangware in Nairobi.
Position Profile: Reporting to the Managing Trustee and the Board of Trustees, the Finance Manger will be responsible for Umande Trust’s accounting and financial management function. 

S/he shall ensure that organization, donor, and national legislative requirements are adhered to, and that the country specific standards are applied in ensuring efficient use of resources and accounting and reporting on same.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Supervise accountancy management as per internal and external rules and regulations in Kenya, and consistent with professional accounting standards of Kenya.
  • Prepare accounts on a monthly basis and manage the presentation, circulation, filing and archiving of accounting and financial documents; update general ledger.
  • Oversee the monitoring of available funding by ensuring the terms of the funding contract are respected as far as the commitment of expenditures is concerned.
  • In consultation with the programme teams and the Managing Trustee, assist in the preparation of budgets and revenue plans.
  • Prepare invoices and supporting documents.
  • Oversee the preparation ofthe payroll of project employees, assuring that all amounts and deductions are made accurately, as required by law.
  • Oversee the forecasting, administration and tracking of cash flow management.
  • Oversee management of the petty cash account, paying and monitoring of advances for trips and expense reports, and monthly payments for project utilities and all vendors and suppliers.
  • Ensure that periodic inventory of the fixed assets (property) of the organization is conducted.
  • Organize finance files so they professionally and efficiently support the Finance function.
  • Prepare estimates for tax deductions, in order to report it monthly.
  • Support the outside accounting firm with respect to all engagements, such as any audits for donors and preparing tax filings.
Qualifications:
  • Certified Public Accountant, registered member of the Institute of CPAs of Kenya.
  • 3+ years experience in financial management and monitoring systems, preferably of civil society agencies/NGOs, financial institutions, possibly complemented by academic expertise.
  • Excellent financial and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and drafting skills (English).
  • Ability to manage a financial/monitoring team and demonstrate leadership.
  • Ability to work with communities to monitor and evaluate finances, investments and money management; ability to operate and interact with community groups and enterprises operating in informal settlements.
  • Ability to design, implement and oversee accounting systems involving multiple small “retail” operations involving cash handling/management (but in process of seeking to become less cash-based).
  • Familiarity and understanding of donor and governmental requirements.
  • Experience with online/electronic/mobile money accounting an important plus.
  • Ability to professionally operate Microsoft Word, Excel, Quickbooks(or similar) software.
