Internews Network is an international media development organization that has been deeply engaged with media in Kenya through several Health and Democracy and Governance (D&G) journalism training projects.
Internews Network is starting a new media & election project that will assist the Kenyan media in playing a positive role in information dissemination in the run up to the 2012 General Elections and is looking for four (4) new, competent staff members to implement the “Kenya Election and Political Processes Strengthening” (KEPPS) program.
Program Manager
The Program Manager will be responsible for the development, programmatic management and coordination of media training and production activities in election related areas, in collaboration with national and international partners and media houses.
The Manager will also be responsible for carrying out print journalism training.
S/he will supervise 3 positions.
Specific responsibilities:
- Provide overall management including technical oversight and quality assurance
- Design, coordinate and direct journalism training activities (workshops, mentoring sessions and roundtables) and other media & election related training activities in partnership with local media outlets, media regulatory bodies, and electoral institutions
- Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, media development organization, electoral institutions and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC)
- Write reports on project activities
- Commission researches
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years experience as a senior print journalist and at least 5 years news management experience
- Experience managing projects funded by US and/or European agencies or international organizations
- Experience training journalists or journalism students
- BA in Journalism and/or Communications (minimum)
Skills:
- Strong critical thinking and writing skills; excellent communication skills
- Significant ability to analyze and interpret media reports
- Thorough understanding of the political and social issues specific to Kenya
- Proven interpersonal and networking skills with international organizations and donors
- Strong organizational skills, with proven ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously set priorities, and work under minimum supervision
TV Trainer
The TV Trainer will carry out training and mentoring of TV journalists in election related thematic areas, prepare training events and materials and write reports on these activities.
Specific responsibilities:
- Design and deliver modules of TV journalism training workshops.
- Schedule post training mentoring sessions for journalists.
- Train TV journalists in formal and informal settings to enable them capture election related stories that meet Internews’ standard of quality.
- Organize and coordinate field productions of visual media features; equipment preparation, transport and other logistics arrangements.
- Assist journalists on location with their technical needs; lighting, filming and sound recording. assist journalists with post production of their stories; script editing, voice recording, video editing
- Establish and maintain an active contact database and strong relationships with partner journalists and TV stations appropriate for election related storytelling on Kenya TV.
- Conduct research and complete all necessary paperwork in relation to the above tasks.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Journalism/ Communication (TV /Video/Film production) from a reputable Journalism training institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with a reputable Kenyan TV station.
Skills:
- Knowledge on political and electoral issues in Kenya.
- Media savvy with a good nose for news.
- Competence in Camerawork, video editing using different non linear platforms and knowledge of appropriate video lighting
- Experience in quality sound recording, multimedia production, script editing
- Good research skills.
- Demonstrated computer typing speed and skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel Project, PowerPoint and using the internet.
Radio Trainer
The Radio Trainer will carry out training and mentoring of radio journalists in election related thematic areas, prepare training events and materials and write reports on these activities.
Specific responsibilities:
- Design and deliver modules of training workshops as per program plans, and schedule post training mentoring sessions for journalists.
- Train radio journalists in program scripting and editing in formal and informal settings to enable them capture election related stories that meet Internews journalism standards of quality.
- Mentor already trained radio journalists and partner journalists using the media resource centers including assisting them to conceptualize their stories as well as ensuring high creativity and credibility of stories produced.
- Establish and maintain an active contact database and strong relationships with partner journalists and radio stations appropriate for election related storytelling on Kenya Radio.
- Conduct research and complete all necessary paperwork in relation to the above tasks.
Qualifications:
- BA in Journalism and/or Communications (minimum) from a reputable Journalism training institution.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a reputable Kenyan radio station.
Skills:
- Knowledge on political and electoral issues in Kenya.
- Media savvy with a good nose for news.
- Competence in quality sound recording, script editing, and sound editing (CoolEdit, Adobe Audition)
- Good research skills.
- Demonstrated computer typing speed and skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel Project, PowerPoint and using the internet.
Programs Assistant
The overall role of the jobholder is to provide administrative support for the Democracy and Governance team with programme management responsibilities.
Specific responsibilities:
- Front line administrative tasks including assisting in the planning of workshops, roundtables and other training events.
- Draft budgets, collate cash expense receipts and voucher preparation for submission to the Internews Kenya Accountant.
- Make travel arrangements for staff, board and volunteers.
- File and retrieve organizational documents, records and reports.
- Act as a primary point of contact for journalists benefiting from the project.
- Collate cash expense receipts and voucher preparation for submission to the Internews Accountant.
- Identify procurement needs and work closely with the procurement committee in overseeing the procurement process
- Source for local vendors to supply goods and services in line with project needs.
- Liaise with local community organizations and NGOs and act as their focal point to ensure an updated communication database.
Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years experience in general office responsibilities and procedures.
- Diploma in Business Administration
Skills:
- Knowledge of principles and practices of office management, organization, planning, records management and general administration.
- Demonstrated computer typing speed and skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Word, Excel Project, PowerPoint and using the internet.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including but not limited to, computers and telephone systems.
