Job Description
Managers will have the opportunity to affect the livelihoods of huge populations of people as we explore opportunities to work together with the Ministries of Agriculture and related agencies in the countries where we operate. We believe there are two key steps to improve yields and livelihoods for farm families in partnership with governments – (i) develop effective policies; and (ii) lead effective implementation in the field. Managers will have the opportunity to work with key officials to make sure policies are designed to benefit the people who need the most help, and they will play a large role in directly managing and leading large scale field operations to ensure that these ideas work for farmers in the field.
We currently have early-stage operational partnerships with three African governments, and are exploring additional partnership opportunities in several other countries. We are seeking exceptional individuals to join this early-stage team, manage regionwide or nationwide products and services, and for top performers, become leaders of this team as we rapidly expand this work to support more farmers in new markets. This person will:
  • Manage a large product or service at a regional or national level. Example projects include:
    • Model Farmer Program – we are supporting extension services across multiple countries. In one country, a manager established a relationship with Ministry officials, identified operational inefficiencies with the structure of nationwide model farmer program, designed trials, and scald up improvements across the country.
    • New Planting Method – in one country, we are working with multiple government agencies to identify the optimal planting method for a key staple crop. For this opportunity, a manager experimented with multiple iterations of the new planting method, coordinate early stage trials with 5,000 farmers and a field team of 50, and is now planning to scale up the trial to 30,000+ farmers.
    • Private Seed Producer Support – use of high quality seeds for many staple crops can double yields for small scale farmers. Unfortunately, the supply of high quality seeds is very limited in certain markets. In one country, a manager created a loan product for producers to help spur supply. The manager is also exploring other operational improvements to significantly increase supply for future seasons.
  • Manage relationships with Ministry level officials or related government officials.
  • Build, develop, and manage a team support implementation of projects.
  • Lead and support design of country level strategy.

One Acre Fund is a rapidly growing organization that has set up one of Africa’s most promising new rural distribution networks through agriculture. We offer agricultural training, product delivery, and financing at more than 1,000 "market points," and we are now interested in exploring the addition of health goods to our work.

We have started pushing health services through our network in the past several years; most notably, we provided chlorine for home water treatment to more than 500,000 children. However, we are looking for an extraordinary leader to thoughtfully leverage and expand our engagement in health. We are increasingly interested in searching for other "low-hanging fruit" – simple products and trainings that we can distribute with minimal effort, for maximum humanitarian impact. Family planning is of particular interest to us, with the recognition that no matter how large our agricultural gains, our farmers are facing a grim situation if population growth continues at its current rapid pace.

The Health Innovations Manager will serve in a career track position that demands creativity, leadership, strategic thinking and action-oriented delivery. As a young organization, we are ready to hand over large responsibility for specific, well-defined work modules, with similar structure to an operations consulting role.

Specific responsibilities:
  • Determine the best products and services to roll through our network. Use a combination of primary research with the world's foremost health distribution NGOs and companies, and secondary journal research to decide which products and services to provide, and how to distribute them.
  • Run high-quality research pilots with farm families to determine uptake and usage rates, and to estimate health impact.
  • Scale up. Source materials, design and implement trainings, and potentially build a team of specialty staff to increase access and improve health outcomes across the region.
Career Growth and Development
One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through mentorship and through regular management consulting-style career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about.  Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions. This results in fast career growth for our staff.

Qualifications
We are seeking an exceptional professional with 2 to 6+ years of work experience. We are looking for a truly extraordinary candidate that will help take our organization to the next levels of impact and scale. This is a competitive posting for a career-track role with minimum initial commitment of two years. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • At least one year living and working in the developing world. This is a requirement.
  • Strong work experiences. Entrepreneurial and unstructured work experiences are particularly helpful.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of work.

  • A willingness to commit to living in rural East Africa for at least two years – this is a long–term, career–track role.
  • Professional/technical skills – very high levels of proficiency with PowerPoint, Excel and other software programs.
  • Language: English required; French highly desirable.

Wanted
Exceptional professional to work on projects that are of strategic importance to One Acre Fund as a whole.

Job Location
Rural Kenya (other countries possible).

Duration
Minimum 2 years commitment, full-time job.

Organization Description
Most of the world's poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a growing social enterprise in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre Fund invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "service bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market facilitation. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure 50-100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

Job Description
We are seeking an exceptional professional to work on projects that are of strategic importance to One Acre Fund as a whole. The goal of this role is to work across One Acre Fund’s various departments and geographies to initiate and execute on projects that open up new operational or strategic opportunities for the organization. The role presents a unique chance to work on strategic priorities with the access and vantage point provided by working closely with One Acre Fund’s field teams.

The role will divide roughly evenly, into three parts:
  • Long-running, cross-department or cross-country initiatives: As One Acre Fund grows, there are an increasing number of projects that do not fall cleanly into an existing department, and we need to execute cleanly across multiple silos. These projects would last at least several months, tackling questions of strategic importance to the organization.
    • Example: Investigate a new strategic idea of potentially incorporating family planning products into our product portfolio, and perform the initial field research and piloting to learn more. Conduct focus groups with farmers, do desk research to understand the policy landscape, then build the foundation for a One Acre Fund-provided service. Again, start in one country and then gradually expand across One Acre Fund network.
    • Example: Training modules for new managers at One Acre Fund. Coordinating with our leadership team, put together a dozen training modules and self-publish them into a booklet for our budding managers. Supplement interviews on management best practices from our field leadership with secondary research.
    • Example: Create a “remote field visit” department that allows management to have eyes on the field operation in remote places every day. Hire a team 3-10 videographers and develop a procedure for them to collect, package, and translate video on ground-level field operations to be used for One Acre Fund’s staff training and quality control. Start in one country and then gradually export this across all countries where One Acre Fund operates.
    • Example: US tech consulting. Working together with our People Operations team, One Acre Fund is working on a project to streamline the processing of over 10,000 applications per year. Scope out the necessary requirements (including lack of solid internet bandwidth in rural Africa), create a job description, recruit a software developer, and then manage the implementation of a new candidate processing system.
  • One-off, fast analyses and tasks: These are analyses and tasks of one week or shorter duration, typically exploring a new strategic direction for the organization.
    • Example: Write an exploratory research memo on the current state of research on sorghum and millet in East Africa.
    • Example: Attend a particular microfinance or agriculture industry conference, perhaps in a speaking role – with the goal of networking and identifying new opportunities for the organization.
  • Communication with key stakeholders: The last batch of work would be to communicate with key stakeholders of the organization, as opportunities arose. This would most often involve creating Powerpoint decks, conducting phone calls, and preparing financial statement summaries.
    • Example: Prepare a keynote presentation for One Acre Fund’s executive director to deliver at an industry conference.

This is a competitive posting for a career–track role, with a two-year minimum. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Strong work experiences. We are looking for a former management consultant (or similar skill–set). Entrepreneurial and unstructured work experiences are also helpful.
  • Strong verbal and written communicator.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of work.
  • Top–performing undergraduate background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume).

We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

Job Description
One Acre Fund believes that policy is all about implementation. No matter how good or bad the policy, its execution on the ground is what changes lives.

To help craft policies which work on the ground, we are starting a new Government Services unit which is working together with regional and national partners to support government-led policy initiatives in agriculture. Following the lead of host governments, we support them with field implementation that changes the lives of millions of people. Our long-term goal is to help government to transform the agricultural ecosystems of whole countries. These projects generally utilize our existing field expertise in farm input distribution, rural mass marketing, and scalable training programs.

For these initiatives, we need both skilled Government Relations staff (see, for example, our Africa Government Officer posting) and also entrepreneurial field staff based in rural areas to focus on implementation.
  • Regional and National Strategy Design: The Policy Innovation Officer will work with other One Acre Fund staff and high-level government officials to develop ideas to improve livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the efficiency of the agricultural sector.
  • Program Implementation: The Policy Innovation Officer will roll out region-wide and eventually nationwide programs. Examples of past projects include a farm input system that delivers seed and fertilizer to several hundred thousand farm families; farm input marketing programs for similar numbers; and training support for 10,000+ extension agents.
  • Team Management: The Policy Innovation Officer will screen, hire, and develop a staff of 30-150 full-time country national staff, depending on the project, to support scaled implementation.
  • Innovation Trials: The Policy Innovation Officer will conduct an ambitious slate of trials within several districts, in order to discover new and effective mechanisms for promoting mass agricultural training—and to identify promising interventions One Acre Fund could scale-up across its entire network of smallholder farmers.
  • Collaboration with Key Officials: The Policy Innovation Officer will update high-level officials in the ministry of agriculture on a regular basis. The Policy Innovation Officer will also collaborate with important leaders at partner institutions.

  • Strong operational work experiences. We are looking for strong leaders with direct operating experience, ideally of an entrepreneurial and unstructured nature.
  • Intelligence, creativity, and a desire to make things work. We need people to develop creative ideas to improve the quality of government services, who can then get out to the field and figure out how to make these ideas work in practice.
  • Leadership experiences at work, or outside of work.
  • Top-performing undergraduate background (please include GPA and test scores on your resume).

Exceptional early career professional to serve in a position that combines both business technology and management experience in Africa.

Job Location
Western Kenya/Rwanda.

Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure 50-100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

Job Description
One Acre Fund relies on several home-grown software systems to help us manage a lot of information. As we grow our organization, we need to continually improve these systems and facilitate the integration with third party tools. Currently our most important tools – a program database and a finance database – are in SQL Server with MS Access as a user interface. Our program database tool handles the enrollment of clients, tracks farm supply orders, manages the delivery of seed and fertilizer to clients, tracks millions of payments, and creates a wide variety of business intelligence reports.

Given poor internet connectivity, our databases use a distributed client/server model where field offices can perform data entry and run reports offline while syncing with a central server as needed.  As we are growing, we are looking to:
  • Scale our existing tools to capture a wide variety of program configurations per country;
  • Provide central management and reporting tools while maintaining a focus on field usability;
  • Move to SQL Server Reporting services with code libraries in C# for sharing code between central web management tools and offline client tools.
The Technical Associate will initially be based in Western Kenya with an opportunity to relocate to other countries. S/he will be responsible for the following:
  • Field-facing mission-critical databases:
    • Participate in the continued development of mission-critical, custom databases which impact every aspect of operations;
    • Assist with streamlining the databases between different countries;
    • Develop reports and data entry tools with an eye towards re-usability across countries;
    • Maintain a long-term perspective when faced with urgent operational demands;
    • Focus on simplicity and usability for our local staff;
    • Work together with our small team of developers.
  • IT: Manage local staff for routine computer maintenance. Assist with network management and client database installation and troubleshooting.
  • Technology experimentation: Experiment with a variety of technologies to improve operations. Investigate appropriate solutions for database scaling and interacting with third party software providers.
  • Operational insight: Become familiar with every aspect of our field operations and identify areas for improvement in the tools we develop to support the field.
  • Other: There is a lot of "other" in a startup.

Qualifications
A successful candidate will have these traits:
  • Solid programming skills.
  • Knowledge of database concepts and SQL; experience with SQL Server a plus.
  • Very strong self-manager. After an initial six-month period of heavy mentorship, supervision will consist of one weekly check-in. We need someone who is very well-organized and can manage their work independently.
  • Work experience, or internship, in some professional environment; ideally 2+ years of work experience.
  • Willingness to commit to the position for at least two years;  ideally some experience living in a developing country.
  • Mentorship ability: this post will likely involve training and mentorship of local staff.
  • No ego or drama. We are looking for others that combine strong leadership skills with a humble approach to service. Our expatriate team lives in rural Kenya together in a group of houses and so we are looking for emotionally stable and happy people.
