Export Processing Zones Authority is a State Corporation established through an Act of Parliament Cap 517 of Laws of Kenya. 

Its core mandate is to promote, facilitate and regulate investments in the export processing zones. As part of its strategy to improve services, the Authority seeks to recruit a Civil Engineer to join its professional staff. 

The main duties of the post will include managing maintenance works of a wide range of the Authority’s real estate, including industrial buildings, offices, roads and jetties, as well as initiating new construction projects.

Job Profile
  • Plan and provide overall supervision of maintenance of the corporation’s real estate.

Position Announcement: Advocacy Program Officer

Family Care International (FCI)/Kenya is seeking to fill the position of Full time Advocacy Program Officer based in Nairobi, Kenya. FCI is an internationally recognized non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safer in the developing world. 

FCI advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights; builds the capacity of local partners; and develops information and training materials.
 
Since 1995, FCI Kenya has been working to focus attention on maternal mortality, forge consensus around proven strategies, and accelerate action to address the causes of poor maternal health. 

FCI Kenya conducts advocacy to heighten awareness of and attention to key sexual and reproductive health issues and to promote the implementation of government policies; conducts qualitative and quantitative research on key maternal health issues; and provides capacity-building and training for medical and non-medical personnel on issues related to obstetric care, quality of care, institutional management, and youth-friendly service delivery.
 
Under the supervision of the FCI Kenya Country Director, the Advocacy Program Officer will work as part of a team with staff in Kenya and New York to advocate for increased political commitment for and financial investment in reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH). 

Specific duties of the position include:
  • Conducting interviews with key stakeholders for national mappings and landscape analyses related to women’s and children’s health issues, and drafting reports of findings
  • Presenting FCI Kenya’s experience, tools, and reports to external colleagues and partners, and representing FCI Kenya at selected meetings and workshops;
  • Participate in organization and facilitation of meetings and trainings with partner NGOs, government representatives, grassroots advocates, and community members to develop coordinated advocacy strategies and consensus messages;
  • Contributing to the preparation of advocacy and informational materials and tools on reproductive, maternal and newborn health and adolescent sexual and reproductive health;
  • Reviewing, editing, and contributing to the development of project documents, including training and other programmatic tools, as well as activity reports;
  • Providing support to other programmatic and fundraising activities of FCI Kenya and collaborating with New York-based colleagues in development of funding proposals and other project documents, as well as maintaining close working relationship with relevant governmental, non-governmental, and funding organizations;
  • Supervising interns’ contribution to the above activities, as requested;
  • Other duties as may be requested from time to time.
Qualifications and Core Requirements:
  • Advanced degree in public or community health, demography, sociology or relevant topic.
  • At least 3 to 5 years relevant work experience in sexual and reproductive health, in particular in reproductive/maternal/newborn health and/or adolescent sexual and reproductive health including the areas of project development, advocacy, fundraising and evaluation.
  • Experience in conducting advocacy, primarily in reproductive/maternal health targeting diverse audience and working with the Kenyan health sector.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, and strong interpersonal and professional communication skills (e.g., public presentations/speaking) in both English and Swahili.
  • Ability to work as a team player.
  • Organized and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability in Microsoft Office computer packages.

The Positions
 
The positions will be based at CIMMYT Nairobi/Kiboko offices. 

The incumbents will work under the supervision of the respective Scientist / Maize Breeder, providing technical support to CIMMYT scientists by carrying out some or all of the following activities:
  • Assist the maize breeders in the planting and management of pollinations in maize breeding nurseries at various locations in Kenya
  • In liaison with the scientists supervise field breeding activities including seed preparation, planting, managing and harvesting of nurseries and trials
  • Assist in the designing, planting and managing maize breeding multi-environment trials in eastern, central and southern Africa.
  • Assist in planting and execution of managed drought stress maize trials in Kenya
  • Assist in planting and execution of artificially stem borer infested maize trials in Kenya
  • Assist in the management of seed and trial shipments to CIMMYT collaborators
  • Assist the scientists in supervising field technicians and skilled labour
  • Under the direction of the scientist manage seed storage including labelling and seed inventories
  • Carry out electronic data capture, data management and data analysis
  • Assist in drafting journal papers from CIMMYT research related work
  • Under the direction of the scientist coordinate CIMMYT project research activities at other locations in Kenya
  • As directed provide technical assistance to visiting scientists and students
Requirements:
  • A Master’s degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics
  • 2-3 years’ experience in the field of plant breeding or closely related field
  • Experience in use of SAS or GenStat statistical software for data analysis
  • Experience in the use of Field book software for data and pedigree management is a prerequisite.
  • Experience in working on maize and especially for stress tolerance including drought, soil fertility, insect pests, post-harvest pests and biosafety facilities will be an added advantage
  • Practical experience in working with field layout will be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated good communication and organizational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to effectively work with minimum supervision
  • Good interpersonal skills, strong team spirit, integrity, honesty and self-motivation
  • A valid Kenya driver’s license.
