Job Position Title: Urban and IDP Field Analyst

Grade Level: National Professional (FSNAU Project)

Duty Station: Mogadishu, Somalia with frequent in-country travel

Organizational Unit: Somalia Country Office (FAO-Somalia)

Duration: 5 months with possible extension for project duration (1 further year)

The multi-donor funded and FAO-managed Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit for Somalia (FSNAU) seeks to hire a Somali national professional who will be based in Mogadishu with the core responsibilities of an Urban and IDP Food Security Field Analyst.

The Field Analyst will report directly to the Nairobi-based FSNAU Urban and IDP Food Security Senior Analyst and Food Security Technical Manager; and indirectly to the Chief Technical Advisor of the FSNAU; with overall supervision of the FAO Country Representative.

The Field Analyst will work in close consultation with the FSNAU Food Security Field Analyst in Lower Shabelle region, other FSNAU Field Analysts, and technical specialists.

The Field Analyst is under the direct supervision of the Urban and IDP Food Security Senior Analyst and Technical Manager and will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Develop and submit monthly work plans in collaboration with supervisor
  • Collect monthly food-security data from Mogadishu and Afgoye corridor, as prescribed by the supervisors
  • Analyze the information, and generate a monthly food security report on Mogadishu population and IDPs in Afgoye corridor
  • Undertake emergency assessments in collaboration with the food security and nutrition colleagues
  • Participate in food security, nutrition, and baseline surveys and assessments
  • Collaborate with the Nutrition Analyst in your area of operation, as well as with other Field Analysts (Food Security and Nutrition) in neighboring districts and regions, and ensure consistency of food security and nutrition information
  • Identify vulnerable areas and key sources of information and make recommendations for further investigation
  • Support coordination of assessments and monitoring/surveillance activities within area of responsibility
  • Represent FSNAU in partner coordination meetings at the field level and report proceedings to Nairobi
  • Ensure that planned activities within area of responsibility are undertaken
  • Report regularly through email, telephone, and/or radio
Minimum Requirements and Skills
  • University degree in related field
  • Minimum two years of relevant work experience in field assessments, urban, IDP food security or livelihoods assessments in Somalia
  • Knowledge and experience with different methods of information collection and analysis
  • Strong critical thinking, English writing ability and computer skills
  • Ability to be impartial in the performance of one’s duties and responsibilities
  • Sensitivity to the social and cultural environment of Somalia
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English and Somali
  • Good knowledge of the area and ability to travel regularly
