Summary:

This is a 24 month research position that offers the fellow an opportunity to get exposure to research through conducting a study on invasive bacterial disease in adults while participating in the provision of clinical care.

The project aims to measure the indirect effect of the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine into the childhood immunization programme on adult pneumococcal disease.

In year two of the project the potholder will be funded to do a distance learning diploma course at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in a subject relevant to the research.

Reporting Lines:

The post holder will report to the PI on the PCVIS study, Prof. Anthony Scott and Dr Anthony Etyang. The post holder will supervise fieldworkers and ward clerks and will work with other clinicians, research nurses, ward clerks, project monitors and statisticians.

Key Responsibilities:

The post holder will be involved in the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine Impact Study (PCVIS) with primary responsibility for the conduct of the Adult Bacterial Diseases (ABD) study.

1. Serve as focal point for the ABD study linking the clinical team, the principal Investigator and the Consultant Physician.

2. Oversee clinical operations related to conduct of the study (i.e. recruitment, informed consent procedure, sampling, visit scheduling, etc).

3. Day to day management of a KEMRI project based in the adult wards at Kilifi District Hospital.

4. Key to providing good quality clinical care of subjects admitted to the medical wards and presenting to the out-patient clinic. Supervise and mentor the clinical officers, nurses in the clinical team.

5. Supervision of the study team including staff from both KEMRI and different cadre of staff from the district hospital.

6. Supervise and mentor junior clinical staff working in the medical wards e.g Medical and Clinical Officer interns

7. Liaison between KEMRI and hospital teams.

8. Recruitment of study patients out of hours on a one-in-four on call rota basis

9. Presentation of the study data regularly to the stakeholders from KEMRI and the district hospital.

10. Attend and actively participate in investigator’s meetings and other meetings within the unit e.g. journal clubs/seminars as needed

11. Be involved in developing the site-specific protocol documents

12. Responsible for maintaining subject files.

13. Ensure data is complete before transcription of information from source documents to the electronic CRFs.

14. Participate in data query resolution process.

15. Presentation of study data at local meetings and/or international meetings.

16. Other duties as instructed by the Principal Investigator/Consultant Physician

Skills and Competence:

Essential Qualifications:
  • Degree in Medicine and Surgery
  • Registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board
  • Interest in clinical medicine, medical research and competency in basic clinical procedures e.g performing lumbar punctures and venepuncture
  • Fluency in both written and spoken Kiswahili and English
  • Ability to lead and work within in a team
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills
  • Computer literate and able to use Microsoft Office software and perform data analysis and reporting
Preferable:
  • Demonstrable active interest and/or experience in clinical research
  • Training in ICH-GCP
  • Experience of qualification in statistics and/or data management
  • Training in adult life support (basic and/or advanced)
