Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF - Africa) is a consciously human rights and feminist Fund based in Nairobi, Kenya, which invests in the transformation of the world in which women live, enabling them to have full and equal enjoyment of their human rights.

The Fund is committed to enhancing women’s leadership to bring about justice, equality, equity and to contribute to the creation of a society free of disruptive conflicts.

Management Responsibility
  • Participate as a member of the UAF-Africa senior management team (SMT).
  • Coordinate and manage programmes implementation.
  • Play a key role in managing and expanding the regional programme portfolio.
  • Ensure sound financial and resource management of all UAF-Africa’s programmes
  • Provide supportive supervision to programmes management
  • Provide technical and programme support services ensuring programmes delivery, high quality outputs, with accuracy and consistency of work for UAF-Africa.
Description of Duties
  • Develop a clear plan and strategy for programmes management to ensure effective implementation.
  • Monitor programmes budgets and prepare budget modifications when necessary
  • Lead in proposal development for programmes growth.
  • Disseminate programmes information by preparing timely and regular reports.
  • Develop and lead research and advocacy activities integrated in the overall programme.
  • Develop and maintain solid working relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead and manage programmes trend analysis for continuous improvement.
  • Assess level of risks associated with programmes implementation and suggest mitigation strategies.
  • Develop guidelines, and toolkits for effective programmes implementation.
  • Manage staff development through performance based management and leadership.
  • Undertakes other programmes related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Forging mutually reinforcing partnerships with relevant women’s rights CSO partners, UN counterparts, academia, media, private sector and with bilateral and non-traditional donors in order to stimulate action in the mobilization of visibility and resources to advance the rights of women and girls on the continent.
Education and Relevant Experience
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in social sciences, law, women studies, or other development-related fields.
  • Progressive women’ rights and or social justice experience at international level particularly work experience in developing countries.
  • Experience of managing a diversified national /regional women’s rights programme in a Funding setting working on advocacy, alliance building, action research and communications.
  • Proven experience and in-depth understanding of gender equality, women’s rights issues, in conflict and post-conflict African settings.
  • Must be a feminist familiar with the women’s rights development needs in Africa.
  • Proven experience in successful resource mobilisation.
  • Proven experience in managing and leading staff
  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive experience on gender programming , including 5 years field experience on Peace building, Transitional Justice and Conflict Resolution with a regional or international organization
  • Strong familiarity with grant making would be an added advantage.
Key Skills
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French; knowledge of another AU official language is an asset.

Programme Officer - Grant Making

UAF- Africa seeks to hire a dynamic, self-driven, strategic thinker and team player as the Programme Officer to lead the grant making programme.

The Programme Officer will report to the Programmes Manager.

They will supervise a programme associate and attaches.

The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya with extensive travel across Africa.

Primary responsibilities
  • Provide strategic leadership to the rapid response grant making programme.
  • Provide critical analysis of funding trends and emerging women’s human rights issues in Africa.
  • Efficient management of the Grant Making team to deliver results
  • Reviewing incoming proposals from groups and individuals working on advancing women’s rights in Africa.
  • Carrying out due diligence before making grants including correspondence with referees, endorsers and UAF-Africa advisors.
  • Corresponding with potential grantees and relevant stakeholders to gather further information.
  • Drafting and reviewing approval and decline letters.
  • Preparing written policy recommendations to the UAF-Africa Board Overseeing all follow-ups (payments, contacts, final reports) with groups that have received grants.
  • Preparing reports and analysis of grant making activities of UAF-Africa.
  • Representing UAF-Africa at various events.
  • Linking grantees with other sources of financial and technical advice.
Education and Work Experience
  • A master’s degree in Social Sciences, Women Studies, International Development, Law or related field (or its equivalent). An undergraduate degree in any of the above field is mandatory.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the African women’s movement, peace and conflict concerns on the continent and ability to network widely
  • Must be a feminist with contextual knowledge of the women’s rights situation on the African continent and commit to adhering to individual and organisational feminist principles.
  • The candidate must demonstrate sound understanding of the politics of funding, must be politically and culturally savvy.
  • The candidate must have excellent time management skills, enabling them to work quickly and efficiently under pressure especially when facing tight deadlines.
  • Must have outstanding oral and written skills (in English and French) and strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge in speaking and writing any other AU language will be an added advantage.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrable passion for human rights with 5 years relevant programme management experience in women’s rights working preferably in a funding context, developing countries experience, and working at national, regional, and international level.
  • Candidates must possess excellent knowledge of computers.
