Job Title: Water Sanitation and Hygiene Project Coordinator

Position Reports to: Meru Area Manager

Department: Programs / Emergency Response

Positions reporting to this title: WASH Health Promoters

Child Safeguarding level: 3 – routine contact with children

Job Duration: 9 Months

Purpose: Working from SCC Meru Area Office manage all WASH activities of SCC in the Kenya / Horn of Africa Drought Emergency response activities in Meru North and Isiolo. Immediate availability required.

Background:

The current state of drought affecting the Horn of Africa is felt seriously in North Eastern Kenya. The failure of short rains in mid October up to mid December 2010 and the late arrival and poor distribution of long rains in mid March 2011 have resulted in significant depletion of water sources, crop failure and livestock diminution.

The Government of Kenya (GoK) estimate that 4.4 million people are currently affected by the drought and in May 2011 declared a natural disaster. SCC conducted a rapid assessment of Meru North and Isiolo districts which revealed need for delivery of water and sanitation services at community level.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

Core Responsibilities:
  • Budget holder for the emergency response WASH project; financial planning and follow up: cash forecasts, realignment pursuant to budget versus actual reports
  • Prepare program work plans:: responsible for overall, monthly and weekly planning of project activities
  • Project activities design, follow up and evaluation.
  • Supervision of project staff: work plan management, performance appraisal, organization of trainings
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: ensure overall quality of WASH interventions, and that LFA indicators are measured and LFA indicators achieved
  • Internal reporting: Redaction of bi-weekly sitreps, output tracker, operational plan and dissemination to line and technical managers
  • Donor reporting: prepare reports including activity narrative, activity databases, beneficiaries tables.
  • Assist Meru Area Manager in facilitating field visits, providing the technical representation as required.
  • Participate in developing new WASH projects;
  • Present WASH work as required using power point presentation, case studies, photos
  • Active coordination with relevant local partners (local authorities, MOH, MOE, MW, local and International NGOs
  • Follows all Save the Children policies and procedures.
  • Undertakes any other tasks assigned by manager
Minimum Job Requirements

Education: Graduate in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Public Health or equivalent

Work Experience: At least 7 years preferably in NGO environment

Sector Experience: At least 4 years in a WASH coordination /management role

  • Excellent technical skills in hygiene promotion and community mobilization in relation to water and sanitation activities
  • Good technical skills in water supply and sanitation infrastructure
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Sensitivity to the needs and priorities of disadvantaged populations
  • Assessment, analytical and planning skills.
  • Excellent oral and written reporting skills in English.
  • Diplomacy, tact and negotiating skills.
  • Human Resource management skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work well in a team
