IR Kenya program seeks to recruit:

Protection /Child Welfare Coordinator

Base location: Nairobi with frequent travels to NE provinces, Wajir, Dadaab and Mandera)

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Programmes, the Protection/Child Welfare Coordinator will:

Overall accountability

To be responsible for overall Protection programme design, implementation and planning, monitoring and evaluation. Working closely with Dadaab areaManager, the incumbent will ensure that core commitments to children are taken into consideration, and that all activities in project area are in-line with IRW’s Child Protection policy, ensuring a safe environment for children through IRK’s projects.

Maintenance of good practice and legal compliance to applicable implementation process of IRK interventions will also be ensured. Such actions shall be done in particular as they relate to Islamic relief mandate and the donors interest.

Assessment responsibilities
  • Review, assess and update child protection needs to map out priority child protection gaps (such as but not limited to: all forms of abuse, violence and exploitation, separated children, trafficking, armed forces and other circumstances affecting vulnerable groups); identify key resources and assets, while considering the impact of the emergency on existing protective systems.
  • Work with IRK’s other sectors to ensure key child protection concerns are reflected in multi-sectoral assessments, as well as other non-child protection specific sectoral assessments.
Strategic planning and programming
  • Highlight child protection issues requiring a response – both immediate (less than 2 months) and at medium term and make recommendations on specific IR actions required.
  • Develop a realistic evidence-based child protection response plan (planning, implementation and monitoring), providing technical guidance and direction to IRK, including both programmatic and advocacy activities (results oriented) focused on children and their families.
  • Keep an up to-date overview of operational matters with knowledge of IR activities in Kenya, and provide an appropriate contribution to development of country’s child focused programme, strategy and policy.
  • Make frequent field visits to all affected provinces to monitor implementation of activities, identify opportunities and constraints and any adjustments needed including additional staffing or staff training or other. Hold planning and progress review meetings with government counterparts and other relevant partners.
  • Prepare documentation to feed into project proposals and reporting documents including updates of the overall situation of child protection, IR’s specific programmatic contributions and progress towards appeal plans.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of the orphans one-to-one sponsorship programme, and any other protection project developed by IRK.
Fundraising responsibilities
  • Certify disbursements of funds monitor and submit financial status reports in close consultations with the Area Manager.
  • Actively identify potential funding for protection, both within Islamic Relief Worldwide partners and external institutional funding (in coordination with Islamic Relief fundraising mechanisms)
  • Ensure IRK is involved into inter-agency funding processes, such as emergency appeals through Protection Clusters.
  • Advocate with donors to ensure appropriate support for child protection activities. Organise meetings with donors.
Capacity building
  • Develop a capacity building strategy that meets the needs and priorities of IRK staff, as well as local stakeholders (e.g. community, civil society, government officials, NGOs, non-child protection humanitarian actors) in order to be able to implement the agreed programmes.
Representational and coordination responsibilities
  • Represent IR in meetings with government officials as well as multilateral and bilateral agencies, specifically CP Clusters, to advocate and promote IR programme goals and objectives, and communicate with major partners on organizational policies.
Education: A degree, preferably in humanitarian affairs, social sciences, ECD, Education, law, development studies or other relevant field.

Work Experience: Minimum of 2 years (of which at least 1 year in the field) of progressively responsible professional experience in humanitarian affairs, human rights, child protection, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation and development, or other related area.

Computer Skills:
Fully proficient computer skills including use of relevant software and other applications, e.g. word processing, excel, spreadsheets, internal databases, Internet etc.
