Communications Manager at Sanergy in Nairobi, Kenya

Sanergy is a social venture that is building a sustainable sanitation network throughout Nairobi's slums, by creating a network of local entrepreneurs who run small-scale sanitation centers. 

We provide affordable, accessible and hygienic sanitation services to individuals, thereby making a valuable contribution to their communities. 

We have launched our first toilets in Nairobi and are expanding rapidly.

Role & Responsibilities
 
As Sanergy expands, the need to communicate our impact and vision to relevant stakeholders will grow. 

Sanergy is in search of a person who will further develop and drive our communications strategy as we stretch towards our goal of bringing sustainable sanitation to over 500,000 people by 2015. 

This individual will have the determination and energy to spend at least two years in East Africa pushing the frontiers of innovation at a leading social enterprise.

Key Accountabilities
  • Development of Sanergy’s external communications strategy
  • Creation of materials in support of Sanergy’s communications strategy, including printed materials, web-based information, videos, and photographs
  • Identification of new funding and partnership opportunities
  • Relationship management and proposal creation in pursuit of funding opportunities
  • Cross-cultural training of staff, mentorship in business communications
  • Web development and content curation, including social media (Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, saner.gy site)
Requirements

Competency / Knowledge Requirements
  • Knowledge of East African political and cultural landscape 
  • Experience with strategy development and implementation
  • Strong business acumen
  • Knowledge of the social entrepreneurship space (funding sources, business models, contacts in Nairobi)
  • Experience in project management
  • 3+ years of experience creating and executing communications campaigns
  • Experience in working in a high-pressure environment
Leadership / Personality Requirements
  • Ability to lead complex projects through to an end point
  • Ability to communicate effectively and inspire others to take action at all levels
  • Determination to seize opportunities and take initiative as appropriate
  • Relationship building and rapport skills
  • Strong influencing and networking skills
Other Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year university
  • Strong command of the English language, Swahili fluency strongly preferred
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and flexible start-up atmosphere
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work effectively within time constraints
  • Proficiency with Final Cut Pro, or equivalent video editing software
  • Graphic design capabilities with the Adobe suite or equivalent tools
  • Familiarity with wordpress and other opensource publishing engines
