Overview:
Nuru
International Kenya is an NGO with a mission of ending extreme poverty. With
programs in agriculture, education, community economic development, and
healthcare, Nuru’s Education Program aims to increase literacy levels among
primary school-aged children in a sustainable and scalable way.
Our
team works with public, primary schools and facilitates literacy-focused
programs during breaks in the school schedule to complement and reinforce the
Kenyan curriculum.
We
are looking for a District Manager to
fill the vacant position in Kuria West District.
The
Nuru Education District Manager is a newly created role.
The
position may be staffed internally from Nuru Kenya staff or externally, as
determined by the Education Program Manager and in coordination with the
Chairman of Nuru Kenya.
Contract
specifications will be in accordance with those established in the employment
contract.
This
job description is a complement to the employment contract.
Job
performance will be evaluated based on the principles presented in this
document.
It
is the employee’s duty to understand and perform these duties.
Manager:
Education Program Manager, Chairman Philip Mohochi
Job
responsibilities:
- Accomplish
the goals of Nuru Kenya and the education program in a sustainable and
scalable way.
- Develop
high level program strategy including, but not limited to: sub-location scaling,
outreach interventions, curriculum development, leadership development,
and staffing.
- Manage
the Training Manager and Program Leaders and oversee the success and
management of their teams.
- Manage
logistics of the outreach and learning center programs, plan and
effectively implement scaling strategy, and coordinate with the Monitoring
and Evaluation team.
- Maintain
excellent, collaborative relationships with school administration,
teachers, community leaders, community members and Ministry Officials.
- Ensure
the tracking and use of operational and impact metrics from M&E.
- Mentor
Education staff and facilitate professional development across the team,
focusing on management capacity and building perspective about the global
education sector.
- Collaborate
with the Education Training Manager in the development of curriculum and
professional development modules for the Education team.
- Coordinate
the development and implementation of sub-location scaling. Project
financial and staffing needs in preparation for scaling.
- Routinely
conduct strategic planning to ensure that Nuru Education can meet all
programmatic goals.
- Create
and maintain the budget for Nuru Education.
- Builds
and maintains relationships with Kenya government officials. Obtains
necessary Ministry approval for all programs at appropriate junctures.
Writes 6 month Ministry report on Education team’s progress.
- Represent
Nuru Kenya / Education to the general public and government.
- Sets
and achieves short- and long- term goals related to the program.
- Maintain
a presence in the field for at least 10% of the week, supervising programs
and providing feedback/guidance.
If
the district manager is staffed by a current Nuru Kenya staff, the candidate
must:
- Demonstrate
an ability to achieve all the above job functions during a trial period,
after which an evaluation would be made to determine effectiveness.
- Submit
to a trial period with no promise of continued employment in the DM
capacity if unable to demonstrate the ability to achieve job
responsibilities.
The
successful candidate must present the following qualifications &
competencies:
- University
degree in education, international development, project management, or
related area
- Speak
fluent English (mandatory), Kiswahili (mandatory) and Kikurian (preferred)
- At
least 3 – 5 years upper management experience. Demonstrated ability to
competently manage 30+ subordinate staff
- Possess
intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel, internet, email)
- Demonstrated
ability to operate in both office and field settings
- Demonstrated
ability to form working relationships with subordinates and peers
- Skilled
in budgeting and planning under tight deadlines
- At
least 3 years of experience developing literacy curriculum
- At
least 3 years of developing and conducting training sessions
- Ability
to use data from monitoring and evaluation to make programmatic decisions
- Demonstrated
responsibility in managing and tracking complex budget expenditures
- Long-term
commitment to ending extreme poverty in rural areas of Kenya
