Vacancy: Finance Officer (Southern Africa Node)
 
About our organization: The World Agroforestry Centre (also known as the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry or ICRAF) is an independent research institution which generates science-based knowledge about the complex role trees play in agricultural landscapes and rural livelihoods. 

As part of the Centre’s work to bring tree-based solutions to bear on poverty and environmental problems, researchers – working in close collaboration with partners – are developing new technologies, tools and policy recommendations for increased food security and ecosystem health.
 
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors.

About the position: In liaison with the Southern Africa Nodal Leader, the Finance Officer will manage the Southern Africa finance office and provide financial guidance to project leaders.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the effective management of internal controls, the operations and effectiveness of all processes, including the payroll & accounting systems at the Nodal office.
  • Participate in the development and review of annual financial plans, budgets & targets
  • Support project financial audits in liaison ESAf regional office for the various Southern Africa Nodal grants to ensure compliance with policy and procedures for budget monitoring, reporting and for operational efficiency
  • Monitor the appropriate and timely use and reporting of budgets
  • Manage the liquidation and flow of funds to partner institutions
  • Ensure that all concept notes, briefs and fund proposals emanating from Southern Africa Nodal office follow the appropriate guidelines
  • Ensure the integrity of the annual financial statements by verifying that they align to ICRAF policies; meet legal requirements; and comply with the SUNSYSTEM and other relevant standards reflecting best practice
  • Review the preparation of payroll, statutory deductions and other related payments by the HR/Admin Officer
  • Maintain updated nodal financial & management data in SUNSYSTEM, ensuring the availability of timely and relevant information for reporting
  • Coordinate quality, accurate and timely submission of monthly accounting returns from Nodal country offices, including follow-up of returns from collaborators/partners and review of expenditures to ensure compliance with the ICRAF policies
Requirements:
  • A Bachelor’s degree or recognized professional degree in Finance/Accountancy, CPA or equivalent
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ relevant professional experience working in a similar role on accounting/financial management programs with an international/non-profit organization
  • Experience with Sun-System, Sage, Drop box, Quick book
  • Be highly competent with information technology
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Have excellent planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Be resilient and able to work well under pressure, prioritize a heavy workload and work both reactively and pro-actively
  • Have a strategic outlook with the ability to drive change where necessary

The appointment will be for an initial period of three (3) years, subject to a six (6) months’ probation period. 

The position will be based in ICRAF Malawi office in Lilongwe.
