In line with FSD’s new strategic plan, a new Centre for Branchless Banking (CBB) has been established to support industry and policymakers to identify and exploit opportunities to advance inclusion through branchless banking approaches.

Given recent successes in the market there is considerable appetite for private sector led investment in branchless banking in Kenya.

One of the Centre’s first activities will be to undertake a nationwide financial diaries research project to create a database on household level financial management in order to deepen our
understanding of consumer behaviour.

The seminal study on the financial lives of the poor, Portfolios of the Poor: How the World’s Poor Live on $2 a day (Collins, D et al, 2009), has demonstrated the value of financial diaries as a research method.

Financial diaries are geared towards understanding how poor households manage their cash flows at a fine-grained level.

The information generated gives an unparalleled picture of household level financial flows, which would be of considerable value to policy and industry players.

FSD anticipates that the study will provide data across a nationally stratified sample and will capture formal and informal financial service use, cash versus e-money transaction patterns, payments volumes, types and frequencies for different tiers (e.g retail, institutional, person-to-person etc).

FSD is now seeking a provider to implement this research project.
