Drought Response - Somalia and Somali Refugees

Reports to: ACT Somalia Forum via its Chairman

Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya (with frequent travel to the field)

Duration of Contract: Begins on or before January 2012 and continues until further notice

Background

The Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance is a global network of 120 faith-based NGOs working in 140 countries.

Members are supported by the ACT Alliance Secretariat based in Geneva. The mission of the Alliance is to achieve positive and sustainable change in the lives of people affected by poverty and injustice.

The ACT Somalia Forum (ASF) needs an experienced Emergency Response Coordinator to oversee the joint ACT Drought Response for Somalia and Somali Refugees in the context of the current crisis.

The Position

The position is jointly established and funded by ACT Somalia Forum member organizations. NCA is host agency and contractual employer.

The Coordinator will undertake secretarial functions of the ASF and represent the Forum at various coordination meetings as directed by the ASF/NCA.

The position also entails responsibility for the overall management and coordination of the ACT Joint Appeal.

Purpose

The ACT Somalia Coordinator will function as a focal point for the ACT Somalia Forum and is responsible for the overall planning, coordination, management, evaluation and reporting for the ACT Drought Response - Somalia and Somali Refugees Appeal (SOM111).

An additional function is the facilitation of capacity development and information sharing between participating organisations and, by extension, their implementing partners.

Competence and Job requirements
  • Knowledge of international and non-governmental organizations related to humanitarian and development activities.
  • Firm grasp of project planning, management, implementation and evaluation is essential.
  • Experience in Needs Assessment, Logical Framework Approach and SWOT Analysis is an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Somalia region and its political and socioeconomic context
Education: University Degree in Social/Development Studies

Experience:
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the co-ordination of humanitarian programmes or other suitable experience
  • Experience in emergency preparedness and disaster risk reduction
Skills: Excellent proposal/report writing skills

Language: Excellent written and spoken English.Knowledge of Somali language is an advantage

The successful candidate will be expected to uphold ACT’s vision, mission, values and strategies. Knowledge of the HAP Standard in Accountability and Quality Management will be an advantage.
