Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Service Kenya-Djibouti Programme is seeking to recruit a qualified individual for 6 months (July – December 2012) for the following position, to be based in Ali Addeh refugee camp, Djibouti.

English Language Trainer

The incumbent will report directly to the Quality Assurance & Standards Officer, while working closely on a daily basis in collaboration with other sectors of LWF. 

The purpose of this position is to improve the use of English language as a medium of instruction in the refugee education in Djibouti.

Duties and Responsibilities
will include but are not limited to:
  • Plan and deliver English language courses programmes to teachers and children in the refugee camps
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver assessments for the English language for both the teachers and the learners.
  • Supervise the English language course teachers on a day to day basis to assure that the agreed upon standards are met
  • Develop and implement baseline English language assessments to facilitate placement in classes according to existing levels, skills and future aspirations.
  • Ensure that current best practice approaches to English as a foreign language are incorporated in the planning and delivery of the course.
  • Utilize appropriate adult learning principles which encourage participation and success from a range of learners especially for the teachers.
  • Develop session plans and learning materials that reflect an understanding of the functional English language needs of the teachers and children that provide learners with basic education relevant to the context of the refugees
  • Actively seek feedback from the participants to ensure a learner-centered approach, which encourages participation from all learners, reflects their needs and maintains high quality standards and learners’ satisfaction.
  • Participate and work cooperatively within a team environment.
  • Maintain learner attendance and records of progress towards skills development.
Person Specifications/Qualifications:
  • University Degree in Education with English language and literature as the main options
  • At least 2 years of employment as an English teacher or trainer (prior experience teaching adults preferred).
  • Highly skilled in the development and delivery of English courses and able to effectively facilitate learning to participants from diverse backgrounds.
  • Well developed presentation and communication skills and Demonstrated initiative and self motivation.
  • Well developed organizational skills, including the ability to maintain accurate student records.
  • Working knowledge of Somali language required as well as the willingness to live and work in a refugee camp
