icipe - African Insect Science for Food and Health is an intergovernmental organisation funded by governmental aid agencies, UN organisations and private foundations to carry out research and training in environmentally sound and sustainable management of arthropods for improving health and agricultural productivity in the tropics.

icipe has approximately 350 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and  Ethiopia.

icipe wishes to urgently recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Bee Health Project Manager in the Adaptation to Climate Change and Ecosystem Services (ACCES) cluster, EU Bee Health Project. 

The position is tenable in Nairobi, Kenya with travel to participating African countries. A competitive compensation package will be offered to the right candidate.

Responsibilities

Overall duties


To perform overall coordination of programme activities, including staff supervision and forward planning, overseeing the design and implementation of the socio-economic monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment activities, and preparation of quarterly and annual technical reports.

Specific duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Be fully involved in day-to-day management of the specific project field and laboratory based operations, as well as effect close interaction with, and guidance of each country project co-ordinator, undertake field visits to conduct annual assessments of country level activities for each of the project countries, and ensure up-to-date reports from each of the research officers are made in a correct and timely manner;
  • Ensure that project staff members meet project activities and reporting requirements;
  • Oversee the design and implementation of the socio-economic monitoring, evaluation and impact;
  • Undertake quarterly and annual progress reports and attend regular meetings for senior project management.
Knowledge required for performing the job

The successful candidate will be expected to have the following skills and abilities:
  • Project/programme management;
  • Staff supervision;
  • Development sector reporting (quarterly, annual);
  • Project/programme management and budget supervision;
  • Design and implementation of socio-economic monitoring and evaluation;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills in project management;
  • Ability to articulate project activities at a level required for interaction with senior international development sector personnel;
  • Knowledge of French is an added advantage.
Requirements/Qualifications

MSc or PhD degree in related subject. 

At least 10 years experience in managing similar projects in Africa.

Disposition
  • Ability to interact effectively with management and field staff in different African countries.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to reason independently.
  • Ability to take independent initiative in terms of day-to-day task management.
  • Self-motivated and highly responsible.
  • Well presented and able to articulate professionally and clearly within the international forum.
Reporting

This position reports to the Project Team Leader.
