Summary
 
Our client, Nairobi Peace Initiative – Africa (NPI - Africa), is a continental peace resource organization engaged in a broad range of peace building and conflict transformation initiatives. 
NPI-Africa was founded in 1984 and has continued to promote peace building practices, research, reflection, learning, documentation, and policy influencing in areas relevant to conflict and peace in Africa.

Job Purpose
 
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide vision, strategic and inspirational leadership to NPI- Africa. 
He/she has overall responsibility for the entire opera-tions of NPI-Africa, and directs its programmes and operations towards achieving the organisation’s mission, goals and strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Leadership
  • Ensure NPI-Africa has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission, and toward which it makes consistent and timely progress.
  • Provide leadership in developing programme, organisational and financial plans, and ensure they are aligned to achieving NPI-Africa’s goals and objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in conflict transformation and peacebuilding in Africa/region.
  • Create a shared vision, among all staff, of NPI- Africa and their role in achieving expected outputs
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organisation.
Representation, Networks & Alliances
  • Represent NPI -Africa to Local & National Authorities, donors, (I)NGOs and other relevant partners
  • Develop/enhance key networking and partnership with relevant actors, manage extrenal communications
  • Place emphasis in raising and maintaining a high profile for NPI- Africa
  • Develop networks, alliance and coalition as necessary with the relevant people, organisations and  movements, as well as with media, in order to strengthen NPI-Africa’s mandates
  • Develop effective relationship with international organisations, governmental, intergovernmental or non-governmental work in and out of Kenya.
Fundraising and Financial Management
  • Take leading role in the development of resourcing strategies that respond to programme and organizational objectives
  • Work with staff and the Finance Committee of the Board to prepare a comprehensive budget.
  • Ensure that NPI-Africa is financially sound and its finances are handled in such a way that all the risks are minimised at all times. Administer the funds of the organisation according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cashflow of the organisation.
  • Ensure that the donors expectations as far as reporting and proper use of funds in line with expected outcomes are met at all times.
  • Ensure that all the assets and liabilities of the organisation are properly managed, and that all statutory obligations are complied with.
  • Provide the board with comprehensive, regular reports on the revenues and expenditure of the organisation.
  • Oversee budget preparation, setting the parameters and the process
  • Ensure that programmes are implemented within budget allocation and according to donor procedures.
  • Ensure and anticipate donor reporting schedules, including spending plan projections
Programme Management
 
Provide a leading role in the development, implementation and evaluation of NPI-Africa’s programmes and services, and ensure the organisation upholds the best practices and delivers beyond the stakeholders’ expectations.

Effective teams, empowering culture, nurturing environment and enabling systems
  • Determine the staffing requirements for organisational management and programme delivery.
  • Inculcate a culture of high performance by ensuring that staff know what is expected of them, and have clear objectives and targets for their work.
  • Implement a performance management process for all staff which includes monitoring their performance on an ongoing basis, providing regular feedback, and conducting an annual performance review.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching support to staff; identify capacity needs and make recommendations for staff development/training as appropriate to ensure NPI-Africa has a strong talent management programme and stays on the cutting edge as a market leader in peacebuilding and conflict transformation.
Reporting
 
Take a leading role in all NPI-Africa financial reports and progress management reports, the board reports and all other relevant data are produced in good time for board meetings.  
A key part of these reports will be providing clear explanations of the institutional performance and variations against plan (including causes and possible remedies), in relation to achievement of defined, targets, results and outcome indicators.

Academic Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in social sciences or conflict management from a recognized institution
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or any other relevant qualification
  • 7+ years of experience in leadership positions in non governmental institutions
Skills and Competencies
  • Strategic thinker and a excellent decision making and problem solving skills.
  • Proven leadership skills; ability to lead teams to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organisation.
  • Strong analytical skills, networking and interpersonal skills
  • Strong programme management experience
  • Strong commitment to the aims, objectives and values of NPI-Africa
  • Ability and experience to conceptualise, implement and evaluate programmes
  • Knowledge of dynamics of partnership and experience in a role directly involved with such partnerships
  • A good appreciation of advocacy,  high level skills in report writing and presentation
  • A mature self-starter, a good communicator and team builder with the ability to manage and motivate staff.
  • Basic understanding of accounting principles
