The Kenya Education Network (KENET) is a not-for-profit membership organization that is licensed by the Communications regulator as an Alternative Network Facility Provider. 

KENET is the National Research and Education Network (NREN) for Kenya that aims to transform and improve the quality of higher education and research using ICT. 

KENET provides broadband Internet services and shared services such as web-hosting, virtual servers, remote storage and advanced research services to the higher education community in Kenya. 

It promotes research collaboration, conducts ICT in education research and pilots innovative learning technologies in collaboration with faculty and students in member institutions.

KENET is seeking to fill the following positions:

1. Director, Learning Technologies
 
This position reports to the Executive Director/CEO of KENET and will be responsible for promoting and piloting the use of modern learning technologies to transform higher education in KENET member institutions. 

This will be achieved through carefully designed professional development programs for senior university leadership, faculty and researchers. 

In addition, the position will design and coordinate innovative and demonstration teaching and learning with technology projects in collaboration with member institutions.
 
This position will be suitable for candidates who are already faculty members in one of the KENET member universities and who are willing to provide academic leadership in the use of learning technologies to transform and enhance the quality of university education in Kenya. Faculty who plan to take an extended sabbatical leave are encouraged to apply.

Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • A PhD in a STEM area or in educational technology from a recognized university
  • At least five years’ experience as a teaching faculty member in a recognized university, preferably in Africa.
  • Experience in developing e-learning materials and teaching with technology or online. Professional certifications in teaching with technology will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in academic leadership and working with senior leadership of universities shall be an advantage
  • Ability to attract grants from industry and foundations will be mandatory
  • Demonstrated high ethical and moral standards
This position shall be on contract terms of one, two or three years which shall be renewable based on performance.

2. Communications Manager
 
This position reports to the Executive Director/CEO of KENET and will be responsible for internal and external communications with stakeholders, managing membership and donor relations as necessary, and promoting KENET services.

Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • An undergraduate degree in business administration, commerce or communications from a recognized university.
  • Post-graduate qualifications in business or communications shall be an added advantage
  • At least five years’ industry experience in communications at a middle or senior level gained in international media companies or in marketing communications departments of medium-sized or large organizations
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and desire to mentor younger professionals
  • Demonstrated high-ethical and moral standards
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of Kiswahili and French will be an added advantage
This position shall be on contract terms of three (3) years which shall be renewable based on performance.

3. Senior Network Engineer (1 position)
 
This position reports to the Head of Infrastructure and will join the core network engineering and operations team with the responsibility for design, implementation and maintenance of the broadband KENET IP network that connects member institutions.

The candidate must be capable of working to accomplish both short term and long-term goals.

Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • An undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or equivalent from a recognized university
  • At least five years’ experience as a network engineer or equivalent in an organization with a large IP network, ISP or telecom operator.
  • Post-graduate degree with specialization in telecommunication networks or network security will be an added advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and in a team of ICT professionals
  • Demonstrated high ethical and moral standards
This position shall be on contract terms of three (3) years which shall be renewable based on performance.

4. Senior Systems Administrator (1 Position)
 
This position reports to the Lead Network Operations Engineer and will join the core shared service technical team with the responsibility for deployment and support of shared and security services that KENET provides to member institutions. 

The candidate must be capable of working to accomplish both short term and long-term goals.

Suitable candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications and experience:
  • An undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer science or information systems equivalent from a recognized university with proficiency in UNIX and at least one programming language.
  • At least five years’ experience as a systems administratorin an organization with a large IP network and/or a large data center.
  • At least five years experience in deployment and support of large information systems (ERPs) and the technical implementation of information security policies in a medium to large organization
  • Post-graduate degree with specialization in information systems or security will be an added advantage
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and in a team of ICT professionals
  • Demonstrated high ethical and moral standards 
This position shall be on contract terms of three (3) years which shall be renewable based on performance.

5. Graduate Trainees in network engineering and information services (6 Positions)
 
KENET invites suitable recent university graduates to apply for a one-year Graduate Trainee program at KENET that aims to develop capacity in the areas network engineering, information and shared services, and communications.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo an intensive one-year on the job training in one of the above areas.

Graduate trainee in network engineering and operations (2 positions)
 
Applicants must be degree holders from recognised universities in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (e.g., electronic engineering, telecommunications engineering).
 
Graduate trainee in information systems and information services (4 positions)
 
Applicants must be degree holders from recognized universities in computer science, information systems, statistics, communications or journalism.

All graduate trainee candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications
  • Must have (or expecting) Upper 2nd class honours & above qualification or its equivalent.
  • Must have graduated in at most the last two calendar years
  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills in English language
  • Demonstrated high moral and ethical standards
These graduate trainee positions shall be on a fixed contract term of one (1) year. 

At the end of one year, candidates will be given an opportunity to join KENET on a full-time Basis.
