WEMA Testing Operations Manager
 
The Role: The primary responsibility of the WEMA Testing Operations Manager is the management of the WEMA Testing network within Monsanto. 

The testing network was developed to allow for the development of improved drought tolerant maize hybrids for sub-Saharan Africa as part of the WEMA (Water Efficient Maize for Africa) project and spans Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. 

The Testing Operations Manager will interact with the WEMA project team and the RSA breeding team.
 
The incumbent will oversee the administration of a research program, including the operation of trials
and nurseries as well as training, development and retention of personnel and cooperators, budget
and cooperator contract management, and care and maintenance of company assets.
 
Location: Nairobi-Kenya
 
The responsibilities of the incumbent will include, but not limited to:
  • Planning and executing breeding nurseries and trials in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Identifying and managing breeding and testing sites in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Managing the testing to produce high quality trial results
  • Manage the WEMA Sub-Saharan Africa testing team
  • Maintain the high quality of the testing network including capital investments.
  • Maintain knowledge of technical advances pertaining to drought stress assessment.
  • Ensure that the research team is trained in all ESH procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • MSc in Agriculture or Plant Breeding or related fields with at least 3 years of plant breeding experience.
  • Strong background in field trial management, field plot technique and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in corn breeding, managed abiotic stress testing or breeding for African environments will be an advantage.
  • Results oriented, innovative, and have proven organizational ability.
  • Multitasking and being proactive are essential for success in this role. Energy and agility are also positive attributes for this role.
  • Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheet software, experimental design, and statistics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to write/ speak in English.
  • Travel to trials in other Sub-Saharan Africa countries is required, however; travel is not limited to these regions.
  • A valid driver’s license is a mandatory with at least 3 years of actual and continuous driving experience
